Is There A Way To Bypass A Tablet Reset Lock?

Thursday, May 4th, 2017 by | Filed Under: Android, Hardware & Peripherals, Security Help

We heard from someone with an all-too-familiar tablet problem. “I bought an open box Samsung Tablet S2 from eBay, from a seller with a very high rating. It was listed as an “open box” tablet. The seller buys these from Best Buy that have been returned, but otherwise look new and are in excellent new condition. The seller did a factory reset. The problem is, when I tried to set it up, it won’t let me get past the Google FRP lock feature. It wants the password and sign in for the user that was previously signed in on the device. I called Samsung, and they wanted an IMEI number to reset it. I gave them a copy and pasted info of my proof of purchase, but that wasn’t good enough. I contacted the seller, and he has no way to get that number. The serial number wasn’t adequate for Samsung to help me. I also paid extra for the Square Trade Warranty offered by Ebay. So far, I have no way to get into this device and set it up for me. Before I have to return it, do you know how to get past that built in feature put on here by Samsung? The eBay seller said he’s not run into this issue before and he’s sold dozens of these. It’s very frustrating to have paid so much money for something I can’t use!”

This points out something important. You should never return or sell a tablet without resetting it first. Best Buy should have checked for this before accepting the return. It’s also possible that there was just a glitch during the reset. These things happen sometimes and aren’t necessarily anyone’s fault.

And a tablet without a password is basically an expensive doorstop. The factory reset protection is meant to keep someone from accidentally resetting the tablet (think curious kids) or to make things more difficult for thieves.

If you can return the tablet for a replacement, it might be the best option. There are some workarounds that I’ve seen various places online that people say work with varying levels of success.  Here’s a link to a video that shows the process.

Let me know if this works for you.
