A reader wanted to know more about how Windows 10 works. “Is Windows 10 a resident program or is part of it or all of it in the cloud, like the new Microsoft Office?”
While Windows 10 does use a lot of cloud features, the program is installed on your hard drive and can fully function offline. You do, of course, need Internet access to do updates or access cloud storage.
While you can choose to use Office programs in the cloud, you can also fully download all office programs to your hard drive and use them offline. When you activate Office, you don’t have to download all of the programs at once, unless you choose to. But once they are activated, they are fully functional without Internet access. You do, of course, need Internet access to run updates and access cloud storage. That’s not to be confused with Microsoft’s free Office Online. Those are available for free, but you do need to use the programs in a browser.
