If all I do on XP is go in and update my software without checking email or going to websites, can I catch a virus or Malware?
It’s always possible that you could run into a virus or Malware when you go online. If it’s a previously known threat, your anti-virus or malware program may be able to take care of it, but they cannot permanently patch the vulnerability.
There won’t be any more Windows updates to deal with, so there’s no need to go online for that. Also updates for plug-ins found in browsers like Flash Player and Java won’t be necessary since you won’t be going online.
If you’ll be going online to download updates for third-party security updates, you’ll probably be about as protected as you can get without security support from Microsoft. These companies will do their best to protect XP, but as we’ve said before, they lack the necessary support from Microsoft to permanently patch issues.
