Left and Right for a Single Line

Friday, May 25th, 2007 by | Filed Under: MS Office Help, MS Word

Left and Right for a Single Line

Ever find yourself in need of both a left and right alignment of text on the same line in MS Word?

What did you do?

I know some pretty determined people and I’ve seen all kinds of solutions for this. Many included things like a lot of extra spaces and multiple columns and at first, these may seem like a good idea, but they tend to cause problems later on during the editing process.

So, how about a method for both left and right alignment in the same line that doesn’t cause headaches later on?

Yeah, sounded like a good idea to me too. Let’s take a look.

First, leave the line left aligned. That’s half of what we need, so leave that setting alone.

Now, let’s get the right aligned portion completed.

What we’re going to do is set a right aligned tab stop at the far end of the line.

The fastest way to do this is to use the horizontal ruler at the top of your window. (View menu, Ruler choice to display the ruler).

At the far left of the ruler, there is a button displaying the types of tab stops available.

Click it until it displays the right tab stop symbol (shown above).

At this point, click on the ruler at the far right margin to set the right tab stop.

That’s it!

To use both the left and right alignment on the same line of text, simply type the first part on the left as usual and then hit the Tab button. Zoom! Zoom! You’re now on the right side of the line and when you enter the text there, you’ll find it behaves the same as any right aligned line of text. That is, without disturbing the left alignment you began with. Oh yeah!
