LotrProject’s Interactive Map of Middle Earth

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014 by | Filed Under: Cool Sites

I discovered this site via the interactive map page, which is why I am starting your journey out there.

This is an interactive map of Middle Earth. You can use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out (don’t have a mouse wheel – use the + and – near the top left of the page). You can click any of the red markers on the map to bring up pop-up information about that location.

On the right on the side of the page you’ll find a menu of options you can check out. They are:

Search – this opens the search field so you can type in a keyword to search the site with.

Timelines – this will open the timeline tray, which you will scroll down to read more in. It covers the Years of the Trees, the First Age, the Second Age, the Third Age, and the Fourth Age.

Places – this opens up a checklist that will let you display places on the map with different colored markers. You have the option to View All, or you can check the boxes for the categories you want to view. Your options are Settlements, Mountains and Hills, Bodies of Water, Forests, Roads, and Regions. Click Places again to close the tray.

Paths – this opens another checklist, but this lets you choose a path that a character from the books took. Your options are Thorin and Company, Aragorn, Gandalf the Grey, Gandalf the White, Frodo and Sam, Merry, Pippin, Boromir, ending with Legolas and Gimli. Click Paths to close the tray.

Events – this is also a checklist, it lets you display events by books – The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, as well as by Year. Click Events again to close the tray.

Info – this just tells you about the map and what it displays.

The map itself is plenty awesome to be a Cool Site on its own, but wait there’s more! If you use the menu at the top of the page you can check out Statistics, Timeline, Family Tree (off the Statistics page), and even really cool Blog articles about the Lord of the Rings.

Go check it out today!
