Making Square Grids

Friday, August 10th, 2007 by | Filed Under: MS Excel, MS Office Help

Making Square Grids

Have you ever tried to make grid paper from MS Excel?

If so, do you get frustrated with the grid when you find that you had rectangles instead of squares?

Are you looking for a way to make the row height and column width the same so that you can get the perfect grid paper?

No problem!

The first thing you need to do is highlight all the columns you want to use. Or, if your worksheet is only for the grid paper, just select everything using the Select All button to the left of column A.

Click and hold on the right border between any two column headers.

When you do this, you will be able to drag the column width and as you move that, Excel will display the current column width too.

Now, what I used to “square things up” was the pixel measurement in the parenthesis. Create a width that looks good and then take note of the pixel number.

Next, repeat this with rows. Highlight them, use a divider line in a row header and move it to the exact number of pixels you used for the columns.

At this point, you’re almost ready to print, but before you do, don’t forget to put borders on your cells to actually make the grid part.

If you don’t do this step, Excel has nothing to print! Keep in mind that if you changed the entire worksheet and then bordered all the cells, you’ll have way too much grid paper printing, so make sure you border only what you need or be sure to tell Excel only to print so many pages of it.

Now, print it.

Voila. Grid paper that’s all squared up!
