Malware Infects iOS Apps

Saturday, September 26th, 2015 by | Filed Under: iOS, Security Help

Security researchers at Palo Alto Networks revealed that they discovered a bit of malware called XcodeGhost has infected dozens iOS apps. (iOS is the operating system for iPhones and iPads)

The researchers initially found 39 infected apps in the Apple App store.  Among them, WeChat, a hugely popular instant messaging app.  The apps ranged from messaging apps to banking apps to the popular CamCard business card reader.

The malware is capable of hijacking URLS and can also send out fake alerts that ask users to enter their passwords and other information, which crooks can then steal. It is also capable of reading your clipboard to find out password information or even reading a password storage app to steal the info.

Apple’s App store has a reputation for being safer than Android’s Google Play store and is widely considered to have much stricter standards than Android for which apps are allowed to be sold through the App Store.

Among the apps affected are:

  • Angry Birds 2
  • CamCard
  • CamScanner
  • Card Safe
  • China Unicom Mobile Office
  • CITIC Bank move card space
  • Didi Chuxing developed by Uber’s biggest rival in China Didi Kuaidi
  • Eyes Wide
  • Flush
  • Freedom Battle
  • High German map
  • Himalayan
  • Hot stock market
  • I called MT
  • I called MT 2
  • IFlyTek input
  • Jane book
  • Lazy weekend
  • Lifesmart
  • Mara Mara
  • Marital bed
  • Medicine to force
  • Micro Channel
  • Microblogging camera
  • NetEase
  • OPlayer
  • Pocket billing
  • Poor tour

  • Railway 12306 the only official app used for buying train tickets in China
  • SegmentFault
  • Stocks open class
  • Telephone attribution assistant
  • The driver drops
  • The Kitchen
  • Three new board
  • Watercress reading
  • WeChat

If you have these apps installed on your iPhone or iPad, you should delete them and then re-download them from the App Store. Apple has replaced them with clean version of the app. You should also change your Apple ID password and other passwords for these apps or passwords stored in a password manager or copied from your clipboard.
