Microsoft Location Finder
Do you travel a lot? If so, when you go to places you’re not familiar with, do you have a hard time getting yourself (and your vehicle) back on track? Well, it happens to all of us at one point or another, so wouldn’t it be nice if you could find out exactly where you are at any given time, without having to invest in a satellite navigation system (like a GPS?) I thought you might think so!
Well, as long as you have a laptop that has wireless capabilities (WiFi) enabled with you on your trip, you can do exactly that. And what’s even better? It’s free, courtesy of Microsoft!
Okay, you may be a little confused, so let me explain how simple this is and how it can help you with your traveling.
First of all, head over here to the Microsoft Download Center and locate the free program of Microsoft Location Finder. Download it (see picture below for help) to a suitable location on your hard drive.
Click on the saved file (LocationFinderSetup.exe) and it will take you through the setup procedure (see steps below).
You will then find that a little icon has installed itself in the bottom right hand box on your desktop (see below).
Clicking on this (or going to Start, All Programs, Microsoft Location Finder) will activate the program and within a short time, the following screen will appear.
When it does, you should see your location clearly highlighted.
As you will see from the above picture, you can (1) change from a view of the road system in your location to an aerial view (see next picture), (2) zoom in or out or (3) refresh the process if you have made any changes.
This image shows the aerial view, which, dependant on where you are, can be zoomed in to almost street level.
The program will search for the nearest WiFi access points and it will use them to pinpoint your location. If those are not available, it will then take your ISP (Internet Service Provider) number and try to find you by using that.
That’s all there is to it!
It’s a very easy and very accurate. And don’t forget, it’s free, so there’s no reason not to give it a shot!
