Missing A Message? Check Your Focused Inbox

We’ve talked before about the push to turn your inbox into a so-called “smart pipe” as opposed to a “dumb pipe.”  A dumb pipe is one that just gives you all of the email that is sent your way and doesn’t really attempt to sort it except for showing you the newest first. You can go in later and apply other filters like “sender” or “subject” if you choose. Many mail clients and services even allow you to set up rules to send certain types of messages into their very own folders that you create.

Now, more and more email clients and providers want to do that job for you. They want to sort your email for you before you even see that. That’s already existed to some degree with spam and junk folders, but providers now want to pre-sort email you want to receive for you. The Mail app in Windows 10 has added a sorting feature of its own, called a Focused Inbox. Microsoft says this inbox is designed to showcase the “mail that matters to you most” or at least the mail it believes matters to you most. This is not a folder, but a filter. This feature is also rolling out to Office 2016, though not everyone has it yet. If you check the top of the

If you check the top of the inbox you’ll see the choice between Focused and Other.

There’s a very different lineup under each of these tabs. So, if you just check the Focused box, it’s possible you might miss an email you want to see, that the Mail app doesn’t think is important to you.  To run off the Focused inbox, click the menu button at the top left and choose Settings.

Then select Reading from the panel that opens on the right.

Scroll down and turn off the Focused Inbox.  If you use the app with multiple accounts, you can decide which ones you want to use the Focused inbox with.
