Moon Zoo

Monday, September 20th, 2010 by | Filed Under: Cool Sites, Uncategorized

I have always been fascinated by the moon. From the lunar landing to discovering what exactly a blue moon was, anytime I find a new way to explore the moon, I do! So I couldn’t wait to bring you this site. What are you going to find here? Amazing photographs of the moon’s surface from the LROC camera from the LRO spacecraft!

So what’s a good way to go about your visit here? I would suggest that you start in the About section and learn about the project and what they’re looking for, then head on over to the How to Take Part section where you’ll learn about how you can help them when you check out the images of the moon. This is where you will learn how to use Crater Survey and Boulder Wars! It’s important to check this out first or you’ll be really confused when you go to use the actual application.

In order to participate in the project you’ll need to register for a Zooniverse account. It’s really easy. Just fill out the form here, and you’ll be instantly logged in – then just click the Moon Zoo logo to go back to the page. You may have to log in there again (I did one time but not another). Once you’ve logged in, you’ll have access to the following categories on the side menu: Crater Survey, Boulder Wars, My Moon Zoo, and Logout.

Crater Survey – this is where you get to see amazing photos of the moon’s surface. If you’ve watched the tutorial you know what to do – if not – go watch it! I was just blown away by the images!

Boulder Wars – in this section you’re comparing two photos and deciding which has more boulders, and your other option is no boulders! If you’re not sure what you’re looking for in the two images head back to the How to Take Part section to find out.

My Moon Zoo – this is where you can keep track of your favorite images, and the recent images that you’ve looked at. Another great section to visit here is the Explore the Moon. There you will discover all sorts of information about the moon like: exploration, geography, viewing the moon from earth, and the moon in culture and history. You’d have a winning bet if you guessed I checked that section out thoroughly!
