More 2006 Downloads

Well, can you believe it? The holidays are almost over already and a new year is pretty much upon us. It’s a time to remember the all the good times you’ve had in 2006 and to pass around some good cheer. In this season of giving, I decided it would be nice to spread even more cheer with a few more downloads that I have showcased over the past year. I know I did the same thing last week, but there have just been so many good ones, I can’t pass these up. These aren’t just any downloads either. They are eight more of my favorites. I hope you like them and find them useful (or just fun!) I use all of these regularly and I think they’re great. Here we go!

1.) ARP++

Its creators describe ARP++ as an advanced version of the Windows Add/Remove programs. ARP++ can uninstall applications that Windows can’t or may not even be able to see. This program couldn’t be easier. When the program is launched, it simply populates a list of all installed applications from your system and presents them to you in a list form. Once the list is ready, simply go through it and choose any entry you want to remove. Select Remove at the bottom left of the main interface. That’s it! Wow, it’s so easy!

2.) CatSpy

With this, you can turn any Webcam into a surveillance camera that will sit idle until motion is detected. When it is, it will spring to life and start recording (per your settings). When the capture/surveillance is finished, CatSpy automatically saves all the video to a folder in your My Documents, My Videos folder for any later use. You’re not limited to one camera with this either. Say you have two or three cameras lying around. Hook them up and Catspy will take care of the rest. All you have to do is basically open up another surveillance window, point to the new camera, make the changes to the settings if you need to and you’re good to go. You can connect as many cameras to the PC as you want, but this is something that possibly will affect the performance of your PC and it may cause problems, especially in older, less powerful computers. So, check it out, but definitely keep an eye out for that.

3.) Personal Finance Manager

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to handling money and my finances, I’m about as organized as an Enron accountant. Bills constantly catch me off guard, I have a really hard time saving up for anything huge and not to mention, all the fan mail I get from credit card companies and banks.

This was how it was until I got organized, made a plan and stuck with it. When I got organized, the financial planets aligned for me and my credit score can vouch for me. I couldn’t have gotten organized on my own though. I needed help and being the type of person I am, I looked for a program that fit the bill. I did my rounds, visited the usual online hotspots to get familiar with all the current titles in the race. There are a number of great titles out there, but one program from the software company, GFP, had all the features one could want, with the added bonus of being cost free. This program is called Personal Finance Manager and it’s a must-have for anyone!

4.) FontPage

One thing that has been overlooked in the word processing game is a good font viewer/manager. You know, something that can help you view you current fonts, install new ones and then compare them until you are absolutely sure about your choice. Fonts can really help set a tone and a theme for a document and finding the right font for the job can mean everything. Around here, for instance, I use nothing but Ariel and New Times Roman and that’s about as exciting as talcum powder, so it’s nice to let my hair down and use some zany unorthodox fonts. I know, I know, I’m a wild man. I just can’t hold it in. Check out FontPage to do the same!

5.) GomPlayer

GomPlayer is a stand alone multimedia player that has tackled a lot of the problems that bog down other conventional players. One of the most outstanding features of the GomPlayer is its library of codecs that come pre-installed with the application. No more hunting around for this and that in order to watch a video. Just sit back and enjoy.

6.) SwissKnife

Most drive management applications give you an interface in which you can use to control different aspects of your computer’s hard drives. With the download SwissKnife, however, you are not limited to just your internal hard drives. You can also manage removable drives as well, which is a great way to keep track of all the new USB storage devices, such as hubs, readers, external hard drives and card reader/writers that we all have plugged in these days. I know with all my gadgets plugged in, I’m pushing over 20 drives and believe me, that is when it’s nice to have a program that can create a convenient environment in which to oversee the big scheme of things. Give it a shot!

7.) IconArt

I hope you like changing things up! This download is going to give you the tools to completely create your own icons, as well as, animated cursors. I know I have run a free icon creator in the past, but IconArt version 2.0 just came out and it has really put the halt on any competition. It’s hard to believe this is a free program.

IconArt, created by ConWare Pro, is a great program that will blow you away from the first icon you make. The tools are laid out in a similar way to any other printing or image editing program, with a complete set of common editing tools. This will allow anyone with any sort of experience with these types of programs to whip out icons from the word “Go!”

8.) SpeeDefrag

As I’m sure most of you know, defragging your PC is a maintenance procedure that can vastly improve you system’s efficiency and performance. As I’m also sure most of you know by now, defragging your system is a long uneventful procedure that can tie up your PC for three to four hours easily. I believe that it is for this reason that a lot of people (myself included) go longer than really recommended between defrags, thus losing some of our system’s performance.

SpeeDefrag will help rectify this situation by streamlining your system defrag and cutting the time down to a fraction of what is was when using Windows for the same procedure. SpeeDefrag not only runs an incredibly fast defrag process, but it also has a couple of features you may find very useful.

Well, there they are. I hope you get the use and enjoyment that I do out of these programs. Each and every one of them is a terrific application that has great usefulness.

Until next week, this is Chad wishing all of you a very Happy New Year with many more awesome downloads to come! Thank you for another terrific year!
