Earlier in the week we took at a list of the most-downloaded apps for the first half of 2016. They were:
- Color Switch
But downloads are one thing, especially since these are all free apps. Do people actually use the apps? This list is for the first half of 2016, so it doesn’t include the incredibly popular Pokemon Go app.
So what are the most-used apps of 2016? At the top of the list is Facebook with 136.3 million monthly active users between January and June of 2016.
That’s not really a surprise since many folks use the app as their primary way to stay in contact with other and keep up-to-date. Remember, this doesn’t include folks who use Facebook with a browser on their PC. Facebook has just around 1.65 billion monthly active users in total.
In second place is YouTube with a 134.8 million monthly active users. For many younger people, YouTube is their primary source of video entertainment. Again, this does not factor in the number of people who access YouTube with a browser. The total monthly active users for YouTube across all platforms is around 1 billion.
While Facebook Messenger is the most-downloaded app, it’s number 3 in monthly active users with around 120.4 million using the app monthly.
Google takes up the next five spots.
4. Google Maps with 105.7 million monthly active users
5. Google Play Store with 93.4 million monthly active users
6. Google Search with 91.7 million monthly active users
7. Chrome with 91.4 monthly active users
8. Gmail with 91.2 monthly active users
You won’t see these apps on the most-downloaded list because they come built into the Android operating system and there’s no need to download.
In the number 9 position is Instagram with 88.4 million monthly active users followed by the Safari browser at 10 with 83.0 million users.
Safari is the default browser for iPhones. Coming in at number 11 is Apple’s App Store with 81.7 million monthly active users followed by Apple Music at number 12 with 66.6 million monthly active users.
Although Snapchat was the number 2 most downloaded app, it’s all the way down at number 13 for monthly active users, followed by Pandora, which is number 14 on the most-used, despite being number 6 on the most-downloaded list.
The two games on the most-downloaded list, Color Switch and Slither.io, didn’t even make the top 30 of most-used apps. Which goes to show that, getting onto phones is only half the battle. The trick is keeping the attention of users.
