Movie Maker Photo Slideshow: Part 2

Yesterday, in part 1 of this article, we created a photo slideshow. Now, we’re going to look at how you can use transitions, muisc, and titles to make your effort really stand out. Let’s pick up where we left off.

You may choose either to animate your photos or to leave them as they are. To add animation to a photo, select the photo and click on the “Animations” tab near the top left of the screen. Click the drop down arrow in the group on the right to see all of the animations. There are quite a few animations to choose from, such as horizontal and vertical pans, or zooms in and out. The group on the left adds transitions between photos.

If you’re showing your work for professional purposes, it’s particularly important to make sure you put your contact information, such as name, email, and your website, on slides at the beginning and end of the reel. You can add a blank slide by clicking the “Title” button under the Home tab. You can animate your text by selecting the text, clicking on the purple “Text Tools” tab, and choosing one of the text effects on the right.

Adding some music in the background can be a nice finishing touch to your video reel. Try to choose a piece that’s around the same length as your video.

To add music, click the “Add Music” button to the right of the “Add Videos and Photos” button in the Home tab. The music will show up as a green track near your photos on the right, which you can then move around.

If you click on the music track and then the light green “Music Tools” tab at the top of your screen, you can set the music to fade in or out and adjust the volume.

As a warning, if you are using your photography reel for professional purposes, do not use copyrighted music, because you then run the risk of potential employers or customers rejecting your work. You can find many royalty-free pieces of music online, however.

When you have finished your video reel and are ready to finalize the video, click on the blue “File” menu in the upper left corner, “Save Movie” in the menu, and “Recommended for this Project”. In the File Explorer that pops up, you can select the folder you want your video in and click “Save”. Remember that the longer your video and the higher resolution your photos, the more time your video will take to process.

To make your video easy to share with others, I recommend uploading your video to a video sharing site such as YouTube or Vimeo. This is an easy way to publish your video so you have a link to share on social media or with potential employers. A video reel can be a unique way of showcasing your work to your family, friends, or potential employers, or a fun way of publishing your photography in one place!
