MS Excel: A Quick Outline… Or Not

Cell borders in Excel are used for an infinite number of reasons: to draw the readers attention to particular information… to visually separate one type of information from another… the list of possiblities goes one and one and on…

In the end it’s not the “why” that matters – it’s the how.

We all know to find access to cell borders on the Home tab of the Ribbon.  (Click here to view instructions for the Borders button.)

For a super quick border around a cell or the outside edge of a group of cells it’s just a quick key combination that you need.

Ctrl + Shift + 7 will put a simple line border around the selected cell(s).

Ctrl + Shift + - will remove an outline border from around the selected cell(s).

**You must use the 7 and – from the maind keyboard – not the numeric keypad on the right.

This second trick for removing borders works with all borders… not just the ones placed with Ctrl + Shift + 7.

It can be used anywhere and does not remove the border lines that are shared with other cells:

This way we can all avoid the problems of accidentally removing some that you still need which is what happens when you use the No Borders option to remove them.

That’s all there is to it… a few keys and you’ve got a quick cell border in place.

Oh, and you should also know that Ctrl + Shift + 7 isn’t a toggle… it only adds borders… so you can choose to border cells individually to create a grid affect quickly too!
