Meghan asks:
My Windows XP start menu is quite large. When I go to it, it’s displayed in one long column. Can I change that in any way?
Hi Meghan! I have an incredibly large start menu myself. Depending on how many applications you have, you may benefit from more columns.
Here’s how to do it:
First, pick any empty area in your taskbar and right-click, then left-click on Properties.

When you click on Properties, your Taskbar and Start Menu Properties box pops up and there are two tabs. Click on Start Menu (which is about half way down). Click on the little button next to Start menu, and then click on Customize.

Another two-tabbed box will pop up. Click on Advanced.

In the middle of the box you will see a list of Start menu items. Go down the list until you find Scroll Programs (it’s near the bottom). If you want one column, put a check mark in the box. Since we want multiple columns, we make sure the box is unchecked.

The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties box pops up one last time. Click on Apply, and then click on OK.

So now instead of one looooong column…

… we have three shorter ones!

That should cut down on some of your start menu search time, don’t ya think?
Thanks for writing, Meghan!
