My Top 5 Android Apps

Wednesday, August 26th, 2015 by | Filed Under: Android, App Reviews

Every smartphone owner will tell you that there are certain apps he or she can’t live without. And I’m no exception. I’ve been doing a little thinking about the apps I love the most, and here’s what I’ve come up with. So what makes my smartphone world go round?

My first two apps came included with the operating system on my Galaxy phone.

1. Camera

This may be my most-used app. I’ve always been a shutterbug, (it’s genetic, I got it from my dad) but back when photos needed developing, it was cost-prohibitive. Plus, you needed to remember to have a camera with you at all times.

These days, I’ve got a 16 MP camera in my pocket at all times. My camera app has multiple shooting modes, such as portrait, night time, and panorama.  Plus there’s an HD video camera.  While it lacks an optical zoom, I’ve found it does perfectly well replacing a point and shoot for everyday use.

2. E-mail

I have to admit that with the advent of Facebook and text messages, my e-mail use declined drastically. But once I set up my e-mail accounts on my phone, that all changed. E-mail was suddenly convenient again. Just like the camera, it was always with me right there in my pocket.

No need to wait until I was home or at a work computer to check e-mail. I can read and send mail just like I was at the PC. I can also attach documents and photos, just like the e-mail client on my PC.

The next batch of apps you need to download from the Google Play Store. Good news, though. They’re all free.

3. Facebook Messenger

I straight-up love this app. Not only does it allow me to communicate with my friends instantly anywhere in the world, if I use it on a WiFi connection, it doesn’t use any of my data plan.

Messenger allows you to send text messages, photos and even have instant video chats with just one tap of a button. You can also make voice calls. Again, do that on WiFi and you don’t use any of your data plan. I’m old enough that the idea of being able to instantly have a video call with a friend on another continent is pretty damn exciting.

Plus, you don’t need a Facebook account to use Messenger. You can sign up with your phone number.

4. Microsoft Word

As a writer, this app is indispensable to me. I can create, read and edit Word Document that work seamlessly with Office on my PC.

Using my OneDrive account, I can access any document at any time. The app offers the ability to use templates just like Word on a PC, and it has easy sharing options for your documents.

There are also apps for Excel and PowerPoint.

5. Snapseed

This photo editing app feeds my photography addiction.

It has extremely touch-friendly controls and offers you the ability to perform the kind of editing you’d expect from a program like Photoshop. That’s not to say it isn’t great for basic things like cropping or brightening up a dark photo.

I’ve had photos taken on my camera and edited with Snapseed blown up to 12″ by 18″ and hung on my wall and I was very pleased with the results.

Try any or all of these apps and I think you’ll be pleased.

No questions. Just 2 of my favorite apps – Gas Buddy because we travel a lot and it provides pricing and location of service stations. Also Weather Bug which provides info similar to the Weather channel but much more including hour by hour and 10 day forecasts and current picture maps which are upgraded every few seconds. Again, invaluable when traveling.

Forgot to thank you for these app recommendations. I already use the camera, messenger and email apps but was not aware of the other two. You explained the highlights of those apps which were some things I was not aware of. Thanks again.

I also love Gas Buddy. I’m sure I would’ve run out of gas a few times without it. Another life saver is SitorSquat. Can’t go on a road trip without it.
