New Chip Gives Camera Phone Photos Professional Look

Your Smartphone photos could start looking a whole lot better thanks to a new chip built by the Microsystems Technology Lab at MIT.
Scientists say this chip can make a phone photo look like a professional took the shot by instantly performing tasks like enhancing lighting, adjusting the color and fixing underexposed areas, and then merging it into one image in a matter of milliseconds.
The chip can help a camera to light a dark scene more realistically than a typical flash. It would capture two images at the same time, one with flash and one without. Then it would merge the images. The details captured by the flash would stand out; but the image wouldn’t look artificially bright the way flash photos can sometimes appear.
The chip also uses significantly less power than a software-based program would to complete the same functions. The researchers say it would work in smartphone, tablet computer or digital camera. No word on when it will be available to the public, but the developers are showing it off at trade shows this spring.
