New Features of Windows 8

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 by | Filed Under: In The News

Cal from MN asks:

I just upgradeable to Windows 7, and now I’m hearing about Windows 8? Already?! What’s so special?

It seems like you just blink your eyes, and you find out that Microsoft is working on a new operating system. Windows 8 is Microsoft’s next version in its Microsoft Windows family, and I’m excited to share it with you today! It has been in the works for a while now, and Microsoft is slowly revealing some of its brand new features. Let’s check it out!

The most extensive new improvement to Windows 8 is the new Start screen, which uses Microsoft’s new Metro UI.

It features large tiles which allow you access to your favorite applications such as weather, stocks, photos, and the Internet. The full screen size and large buttons are optimized for touch screen computers such as tablets, but will also work well with a mouse and keyboard. The touch Start screen utilizes gestures such as swiping, and pinching to perform actions. The Start screen will open when you first boot up Windows, or when you press the “Windows” button on your keyboard.

If you’d like to see your regular desktop, you can select the Desktop tile or choose a traditional desktop-based program such as Word or Paint.

Microsoft has also chosen to adopt it’s Ribbon menu (from Microsoft Office) in other major Windows applications, most notably, Explorer. As you can see, you now have access to many more features without navigating through long menus. All of the Ribbon features will also have corresponding keyboard shortcuts.

Beta versions of Windows 8 also indicate a new PDF reader called “Modern Reader” and an updated task manager named “Modern Task Manager”.

Another new feature native to Windows 8 is an App Store which will allow you to download new programs without having to visit a website. That sounds pretty neat, huh?

Finally, Microsoft has stated that the hardware requirements for Windows 8 will be the same as or lower than those of Windows 7. So if you are running Windows 7 right now, I’m sure upgrading will be quite easy.

Windows 8 is poised to be released on desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablets, servers, and media center PCs, but Microsoft hasn’t made an exact release date known.

That’s all the news I have for you now, but stay tuned for more updates on Windows 8!

About how much is the new windows 8 going to run, I’m going to wait for 8 instead of going to 7. If I start saving now, by the time 8 comes out I can afford it. :-)

I had XP and loved it, thought Windows 7 would be an updated version but was very disappointed. Hoping Windows 8 will be better.
