Chrome Tab Navigation Shortcuts
Here are a few Google Chrome tab navigation shortcuts for the keyboard enthusiasts out there. However, these shortcuts aren’t limited to Chrome, as most will work in Firefox, and several in Internet Explorer and Opera. To navigate eight tabs or fewer, hold the Ctrl key while pressing any number 1 through 8, to open the corresponding tab (from left to right). Hold the Ctrl key and press 9, to be moved to the last tab on the right. Ctrl+Shift+Tab shifts to the previous tab. Or, the previous tab can be reached using Ctrl+Page Up (PgUp) To switch to the next tab, use Ctrl+Tab. Or the next tab can be accessed using Ctrl+Page Down (PgDn) In order to use the PgDn and PgUp keys on the numeric keypad, Numbers Lock (NumLock) may have to be deactivated. Ctrl+W or Ctrl+F4 will close the tab currently open. Once on the desired tab, navigate up and down the webpage with the arrow keys. For more mouse-free browser navigation suggestions, see the articles, Restore Last Tab and Go Back without a Back Button.

Eleanor writes: I went to do something the other day on my computer and it asked me for an “elevated prompt”. What is that? Hi, Eleanor! Thanks for writing. I don’t know how long you have been using your computer, but if it’s been more than 24 hours, you should have run across some type of security warning by now. That’s because with Vista came security requirements beyond the realm of imagination. At first I thought that Vista and Windows 7 were just pretty paranoid operating systems, but now since all of this bad ‘ware stuff, I have (kind of changed) my mind. Anyway, Windows prompts you for an elevated prompt (sorry, I couldn’t resist the pun) when it requires administrative – or elevated – privileges and you are not in a position (like king – Oops, I meant administrator) to carry out whatever task it is that you are trying to do. A Command Prompt lets you change settings, run programs, access files, etc. The thing is, a standard Command Prompt window (see screenshot below) only runs commands that don’t require Administrator privileges. A lot of troubleshooting depends on using the Command Prompt and you may have to be king – oops, I did it again – or an Administrator to carry those command out. Enter the elevated prompt. This is a standard Command Prompt window:
Obviously you don’t want to have to go running to an administrator every time you have an elevated command prompt request, so there are ways to get those privileges so that you don’t have to. The first (really easy) way to get an elevated – or Administrator – prompt: Go to your Start button and left-click. Then left-click on All Programs.
Now find and left-click on Accessories (right-side of the Start menu), and then right-click on Command Prompt. Now left-click on Run as Administrator.
For the heck of it, note the tops of each window. The standard command prompt window will have this at the top:
The Administrator (elevated) Prompt window will have this at the top.
The second (really easy) way to get an elevated (Administrator) prompt: Left-click on your Start button and then type in cmd.exe in the Search box. In the menu that pops up you will see Run as Administrator. Left-click on that.
You now have your elevated prompt.
Okay, Eleanor, there you go! An elevated prompt is simply a prompt at a king’s – excuse me! – Administrator’s – level. And using either method above will get you one. ~ Lori Cline Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here! Wireless Chargers for Mobile Devices Sometimes it’s great to have chargers that don’t need cables or power points. Here are two nifty wireless chargers that work great for mobile devices. Energizer Inductive Charger
It’s a cool wireless charging pad that allows you to charge your phone without cords using a universal technology called Qi (pronounced ‘chee’). You can charge two phones with it in addition to attaching any other device through the USB port, like a phone, headset, mp3 player, camera or GPS device. To confirm the charging, there are two LED lights pointing to each. The only downside? The iPhone and Blackberry Curve 8900 need a Qi Sleeve and Qi Door respectively, each costing additional $30. The charger costs $79. Get more over at Worldstart! (Want these tips in their entirety? Sign up for Premium!) Michelle from NH asks: Thanks for the great question Michelle. I really love that there are programs that let you create knitting charts online now. I found this one at Tricksy Knitter and thought it would be fun to share it with you. This chart maker is used to make color charts that you can print out, or share on your blog. Click either the color chart maker picture, or you can click the words Color Chart Maker (it’s a link, but I didn’t realize that until I came back the third or fourth time – I had just been clicking the image). Either way you go about it, you’ll be whisked away to the chart maker. You’ll want to name your chart. Just type what you want to call it into the name field, and then click the color you want to use to start with. The next step is to click the boxes that you want to fill in with that color. If you want to switch color click change colors and then pick a new color from the palette. Once you have your chart done, you can write instructions or comments in the comment area, and then at the top of the interface there is a box you can check to share your work in the chart galleries on the site. You can select the category you want to share it in from the dropdown box next to that check box. If you’d like to check out the galleries of chart that other people have submitted, just look at the left and under Color Charts you’ll find the gallery listing. The galleries are Animal Motifs, Robot Motifs, Word Motifs, Pattern Motifs, and +Add a Chart. (You can also access the chart maker via the Add a Chart link). If you want to print the chart you’ve made, make sure you save your work first, and then click the link “click here to print your color chart”. You can also save and then click the print button on the chart maker. You’ll have to register to print it out (in order to save your work) just provide an e-mail address and create a password and then click the Login or Register button. This is a fun way to create charts that you can use to spice up your knitting! http://www.tricksyknitter.com/pages/knitting-chart-maker.php ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com
