Search Twitter Feeds on Google

Google has added yet another layer of functionality to their much beloved search engine. Now you can actually search real-time social networks and watch them update right from your search results!

Here's how:

Go to Google and do a search, like normal.

After the results pop up, click the plus sign next to “Show Options”.



You'll be presented with a plethora of additional filters to pass your search results through, including a frequency filter that allows you to specify what time frame you can see.

Click “Latest”



Ta-Da! Now you can see things as they happen! Try it with a celebrity or organization; anything or anyone that updates their Twitter feed a lot!

Q:
The mouse I use has a scroll wheel on the top of it and lately, the wheel has not been working properly. Do you know of anything I can do to fix it? Please help, I really miss my mouse!

A:
On any version of Windows, the first thing you need to look at is the Mouse Properties window. To get there, go to Start, Control Panel and then click on the Printers and Other Hardware link. From there, just click on the Mouse link. (If you're running Windows Vista or 7 go Start>Control Panel>Hardware and Sound and click on Mouse under "Devices and Printers"). After doing this, the Mouse Properties box will then open.

Click on the Wheel tab and adjust the number of lines your mouse is able to scroll through at one time. Yours may be set too high and your mouse can't handle it. You can go up to 100, but it's best to keep the number kind of low. Mine is set to three lines at a time.



Just change the number and keep trying your mouse until you find a number that fits your wheel better. When you think you've got it fixed, click Apply and OK. If that doesn't work, go back to the Wheel tab and select the option of "One screen at a time." (Older versions may say "One page at a time"). This may help slow your mouse down a little so it can work better for you. Click Apply and OK again to make all the changes.

If you're still having trouble with the wheel after that, you may want to try and adjust your mouse through the program you installed when you first got it. (That is, if your mouse is a non-Microsoft brand). For example, if you're using a Logitech mouse, it may be configured a little differently and you can use the software that came with it to fix it. Just load up the CD or download the drivers from the company's website and look for the Mouse Settings. You can then go through the settings and adjust what needs to be done. They'll probably be similar to what I already explained up above.

If you're still having trouble with your mouse wheel after all of that, it's likely that your mouse is defective and you'll probably want to look into buying a new one in the near future. If you don't want to pay for a whole new one, you can try getting a replacement from the manufacturer, but I'm not promising you that will work. Mice aren't too expensive these days, but I understand that you have to do what you have to do. Either way, I hope you're able to get your mouse back up and running again!

Who Decided That?

Ever combine a couple of lists in MS Word?

You know… where you copy and paste one list onto the bottom of another?

Were they formatted the same way to begin with?

Probably not so, I must ask, when you finished did you sit there and wonder who decided what formatting to apply to the combined list?

I mean, let's face it, you may have preferred one formatting over the other and somehow you ended up with the one you didn't want to keep.

So, once again we ask… Who decided that?

Obviously it wasn't you, and since it isn't a random thing, someone made the decision (someone in a far off land otherwise known as the world of Microsoft).

The trick to combining lists (bulleted or numbered) is to simply know the rules.

When you paste one list into another you'll find that the formatting of the second list is changed to match the formatting of the first list where it's pasted.

With just that little bit of knowledge you can prevent a lot of extra frustration and formatting time. Just be sure to paste into the list that contains the formatting you're looking to keep to be pleased with the results the first time.

Empty Folder Contents

How many times has something as simple as deleting files wasted your time? Windows file management has progressed much since the old days of MS-DOS, but it’s still far from perfect.

Deleting files is easy in Windows; you just select the folder where the files are stored and press “delete”. But what if you had to delete a whole bunch of files while maintaining the folder structure?

The usual way involves going into each folder, selecting the files and pressing delete. Then you repeat the process for every folder you want to empty of its contents.
This isn’t a problem if you have two or three folders to empty, but if you have a folder structure made up of tens or hundreds of folders, with maybe one or two files in each; it quickly turns into a big time waster.

Luckily there is a solution to this problem. By tweaking the Windows Registry you can add an “Empty folder contents” command to the right-click context menu of your folders.

With one mouse click you could delete all the files in that folder as well as files in any subfolders, while maintaining the folder tree structure.

Warning: Before we go any further, I'd like to point out that messing around with the Windows Registry is not meant for beginners. Editing the Registry directly can have serious, unexpected consequences that can prevent the system from starting and require that you reinstall Windows. If you feel that you do not understand or are unable to perform the steps below, please seek expert advice.

Also, I recommend backing up the Registry before attempting any modification.

To back up the entire Registry in any Windows version, open the Registry editor. Type regedit in the search bar of the start menu, right click on regedit.exe and select Run as administrator. Click on the My Computer (or Computer for Vista and 7) registry key at the top and select File in the top left corner of the window. In the File menu select Export…, give it a name like “registry backup” and choose a safe location to save your file.

If something does go wrong while editing, you can restore the Registry by navigating to where you saved the .reg file and simply double click on it.

Now that you have backed up the Registry you can proceed with the rest of the article.

To change a Registry setting we must first open the Registry Editor. Just follow the same steps above: In Windows XP click Start>Run and type “regedit” then click OK. For Vista and 7, click Start and type “regedit” in the Search Box and pres Enter.



The Registry Editor will now open.

The setting we need to change is located in the Registry structure, at the following address:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

Click the plus sign next to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and scroll down the list until you locate Directory.

Then click the plus sign next to Directory to reveal shell.

Right click the shell key and from the menu select New and then click on Key.

Type Empty Folder Contents and press Enter from the keyboard.

Right click on Empty Folder Contents and from the menu select New and then click on Key.
Type Command and press Enter from the keyboard.



Left click on the Command key. Locate (Default) at the top of the right window panel and right click on it.

In the menu select Modify and an Edit String dialog box will appear.

Carefully type: cmd /c "cd /d %1 && del /s /f /q *.*" verbatim in the Value Data field and click OK.

Please type the command rather than copying it from above or it may not work.

Now close the Registry Editor by clicking File and then Exit from the menu.



You will see the new Empty Folder Contents command in the right click contextual menu of any folder.

Warning: Clicking the Empty Folder Contents command will delete all the files in the folder and any subfolders without asking for a confirmation. It will also bypass sending the deleted files to the Recycle Bin. Instead it will remove the files directly. Use this command at your own risk.

My favorite feature is the Stash. The Stash allows you to keep track of all the yarn you have in your home. I found a small yarn store in my dining room this winter and I am so happy to have a way to organize it once and then be able to refer to what’s online to know what I have. I won’t have to go dig through my yarn bag, or drawer. I can select projects, and go see what yarn I have, and even where I am storing it. The Stash is also a great way for you to sell yarn that you don’t need or like anymore. People can browse your stash and if they see something they need to finish up a project they can contact you about it. It’s awesome!

My second favorite feature of the site is the pattern search. You can find tons, and I’m not kidding I mean tons, of free patterns. You can even set the search up so that it only finds free patterns. You can also narrow it even further so that it only finds free crochet or free knit patterns. If you design patterns you can sell them or share them free here as well.

My third favorite feature – and really they’re all competing with each other for my love – is the project queue. As you are searching through the patterns on the site you can add them to your queue, so you never run out of anything to do!

Another great feature is that you can add the projects that you are working on and keep track of them via your Project page. Just click add, fill out the form, it will look for the pattern on Ravelry and then you can keep track of your progress. This has really helped me stay on track and involved in my projects.
