Facebook IPO

Facebook Going Public

After numerous rumors swirled around the Internet and financial circles, Facebook finally went public with their IPO (Initial Public Offering) on Wednesday.  The goal was to raise as much as $5 billion in the initial offering.  This would make it the biggest IPO of any internet-based company, beating out Google’s $1.9 billion debut back in 2004.

The real question that everyone wants to know, however, is how much Facebook is actually worth?  Many believe that the social network site is worth somewhere in the range of $75 to $100 billion.  This is an estimate of Facebook’s worth once shares are listed a few months from now.  Does this mean that you can buy shares and cash in then?  Unfortunately not, as the IPO will include Facebook staff and large investors at first.  Over time, if investors feel comfortable, you’ll see shares open up to the typical Facebook user.

For now, you can be comfortable with the fact that Facebook will have to answer to the public after its IPO, which is big news considering Facebook’s recent privacy concerns.  That and the fact that Bono, yes that Bono, will own 1.5% of your beloved social network.

Microsoft Ad

Microsoft Takes Aim At Google (And Its Privacy Concerns)

It looks like Microsoft is taking some shots at Google’s less than popular privacy policy changes.  The policy changes include Google taking user data from all of its services, such as Gmail, YouTube, and Search, and sharing activity between all of them.  What that means is the items you search for, the content you email, and the videos you watch on YouTube will all be collected and stored together.  The reasons for the change in data sharing are focused on delivering better and more personalized results, but also delivering more targeted ads.

Microsoft is taking a stance and running a series of ads in major newspapers in response to Google’s policy changes.  The goal?  Forget Google and start using Microsoft services instead.  The ad includes large text at the top stating “Putting people first.”  The purpose is to convince people that their personal information isn’t exactly safe with Google anymore, and that Microsoft cares more about its users.  The ads will be ran in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and USA Today.

Computers 101

Bob from Rutland, VT  asks:

How do you format a flash drive?

There are many good reasons why you might want to format a flash drive. Formatting is a good way to fix any quirks and free up some space, but it will erase all the data on your drive, so make sure you back up any files you need before you format anything.

The procedure is pretty simple. The following instructions are for a Windows 7 PC, but they are almost identical for Vista, and very similar for Windows XP.

1. Plug in your flash drive, click Start and then Computer. You should see your flash drive listed in a window alongside your other drives.

Flash Drive in Explorer

2. Right-click on your flash drive and then select Format… from the context menu.

Format...

3. In the Format window, you get the choice of which file system to use and the option to change the allocation unit size. However, it is often best just to leave these alone and click Restore device defaults.  This restores your flash drive to its original settings.

Format Menu

4. If you drive has never been reformatted and you want to be sure to erase all data and start fresh, uncheck the Quick Format box. It takes a little longer to complete the formatting, but it will be a more thorough job and has a better chance of fixing any corruptions on your flash drive.

5. When you are ready, click Start. You will be greeted with one final warning that informs you ever so politely that the actions you are about to take will result in the complete and utter destruction of all the data on your device. So, if you are not sure what is on your drive, now is the time to check. Otherwise, click OK to continue.

Warning

6. Now all you need to do is sit and wait for the green line to crawl its way to the right hand side of the progress bar.

Formatting bar

7. Once you are done, you should see a dialog box that informs you of your successful formatting.

Format Complete

Congratulations! You have just successfully formatted your USB flash drive.

Uninstall Android Applications

Before I buy an Android application, I try the free trial version. More often than not, my experience with the trial version is a key input to the buying decision. Over a few months, my Android phone has a litany of trial version applications, which I do not actually need. It’s time to get rid of the clutter. In this tip, I’ll show you how to uninstall Android applications. I’ve used the most commonly found version of Android, 2.2,  to illustrate the steps.

Step 1: Access Settings.

There are two ways of accessing Settings. The simplest is to press the menu key on the phone. Typically, it is the left corner key on Android phones. After you press this key, some options appear. Tap Settings.

Access the Settings menu.

Amanda's Coolsite

AndHeDrew

I found this site while looking for ways to help inspire my sister. She is on the precipice of making some very hard life decisions. Should she continue working where she is employed now? Should she look for a different, more fulfilling job? Should she go back to school and get a degree in something she is passionate about? These are all questions that only she can answer for herself, but she asked me if I knew of any websites that would help her know how to answer those questions for herself.

She was looking for tools to use to help make the decisions, so I started looking on the web and ran across an article on this site: 25 Ideas to Help You Live on Purpose. I linked it to her over Facebook and she told me that was just the sort of thing she needed. Even if she were to just pick one of the things of the list like goal setting, or really sits down and thinks about the answers to the questions #21-22 ask, she’ll be in a better place organizationally than she was before.

This site offers inspiration to live intentionally, be creative, and really see the beauty of the world around you. Navigation is very straightforward – there is a featured section that rotates through whichever articles are being featured currently and beneath that you have the article listing and you use the next button to navigate to past articles. There is also categorical navigation at the top of the page if you rather that will help you navigate back to the home page, find the site author’s contact information, and check out the archives.

This site is full of inspiration that you can take in and use to change your life. Even if you only pick one thing, for example, I am going to try to think more positively.
