Quick Tips

Take a Peek

One of my favorite features so far in Windows 7 is the ability to take a look at what's going on in the taskbar without actually having to click on or maximize anything. Want to know how? Great!

When you have programs present in the taksbar, just take your mouse pointer and hold it over the program you'd like to take a look at.

It's a mini-preview!

It comes in especially handy when you have multiple windows in a program group and you want to access something quickly.

Clean Out The JUNK And Get TONS Of Hard Drive Space Back!

In Less Than 30 Minutes, Your Computer Can Be Wicked Fast

Maybe Even Better Than New!

WOW - Now THAT'S An Optimizer!!

Know what's really frustrating? When you're trying to work on your computer and it randomly locks up, crashes, gets sluggish, pops up weird error messages, and just doesn't preform like it did back when it was new. Don't ya just hate that? Oh, and what about startup? Does it seem like you can turn on your computer, go out for lunch, come back and then maybe - just MAYBE - the stupid thing will be finished booting up?

I hear ya!

Well, we just discovered one of the coolest programs ever for optimizing your computer and getting it running like new! It's called Registry Repair and oh, is this thing absolutely LOADED!

Get Ready To Be Blown Away!

Check it out - this must-have program can...

Optimize & Speed Up Your Windows Registry - Automatically!
Scan, Find, Fix And Repair Registry Errors - Again, Automatically!
Supercharge Your Windows Startup Time!
Backup Your Windows Registry (THIS can be a lifesaver)
Clean Out ALL The Excess Junk Taking Up Space On Your Hard Drive!
And TONS MORE!

OK, I know, I know, you're worried about rootin' around in your registry and trying to fix things - and hey, that's a valid concern! One wrong move in the Windows Registry, and BAM!! You may be up a digital creek without a paddle! Well, that's where this amazing new software comes in!

Registry Repair makes it EASY for ANYONE of ANY skill level to optimize their registry for the absolute BEST performance! It's SOOOOOO simple! We're talking 3 steps - and all you're really required to do is press a mouse button to tell it to go to the next step! WOW!

Step 1.
Run a scan - The software will deep-scan your Windows registry and uncover all the obsolete, erroneous, or leftover entries you need to get rid of so your computer can run like a top-end Italian sports car! It will uncover errors of ALL kinds - uninstall entries, font entries, shared DLL problems, help files trouble, old windows startup items, program shortcuts - and TONS more! Again - this is all automatic! REALLY! Just press SCAN and sit back for a few minutes!

Can you imagine trying to find all that yourself???? Talk about a all-weekend long project! Ouch!

Step 2. After the scan, it will show you what it found and ask if you want to fix the problems. Take a look at the screen shot below - that's my computer - and it had literally THOUSANDS of problems that this uncovered in a matter of minutes! Normally, it would take hours - heck DAYS - to find and fix all that! Blows your mind, doesn't it?

Well, with this amazing software, fixing all those trouble spots couldn't be easier! Just press the "Fix Errors" button!! The program leaps to action and fixes all the messed up registry entries in no time (less than a minute in my case)! All automatic!! Oh, and running it solved several little minor ongoing problems I've been having (including a weird little thing with my mouse cursor "sticking" on the screen) - all fixed now! I LOVE this thing!

Mind-blowingly, jaw-droppingly INCREDIBLE!!

Step 3. OK, there really isn't a 3rd step - it just shows you that it finished the job! How cool is that?

Now, if that's all it did, it would be WELL worth the money! BUT - it gets even better!

This also has the best start-up manager I've ever seen! See, here's the problem - the more stuff you install on your computer, the more stuff that seems to get added to Windows startup. Basically you end up with dozens and dozens of memory-hoggin' programs running in the background that, frankly don't do ya any good! And OUCH - They will SLOOOOOOWWWW things down big time and literally bring your computer to its digital knees!!

Want your speed back? Wait till you see this!

Just run this software and click the Startup button! You'll be greeted with a (possibly long) list of programs that start up everytime your computer does! These insidious little guys run unseen in the background and are HUGE reason for slow computers and boot ups that seem to take all day! Sure, some are OK and you'll need them, but most - dump 'em and enjoy a faster computer!

Now, unlike using other software, this REALLY digs deep into your system - it doesn't miss a thing! I saw stuff that was leftover from uninstalled programs I thought I'd gotten rid of months ago! Windows was still trying to start these things every time it started!  I've used other methods to disable this stuff but ya know - a LOT of this garbage simply didn't show up ANYWHERE ELSE - but THIS found 'em! That's super-impressive!!

Once you have the list, this makes it easy to get rid of the stuff you don't need, and keep what you do need - we're talking just a few simple mouse clicks! WOW - INSTANT pick-me-up for your computer!!

Oh, and once you reboot after cleaning out all the excess junk get ready to see some SPEED come back to your computer! Not only will it boot into Windows a heck of a lot quicker, it will run a LOT faster once it gets there!

I tell ya, THIS is the single most effective way to make your computer run faster! NOTHING - and I mean NOTHING - will give you sooooo much improvement so fast and for so little invested!

Pretty cool huh - a faster, leaner, less-error prone registry that keeps your computer nice and stable PLUS a faster boot-up AND a quicker computer overall! Told ya this was impressive - but that's not all!

This comprehensive software is also the "Mr. Clean" of the computer world! This has a disk cleanup that can recover AMAZING amounts of space! I honestly couldn't believe how much space this was able to recover on my computer - we're talking nearly 3 GIGs when it was all said and done! And easy - heck, just press the Cleanup Button and place a check next to the area you want to clean!

I just did the "Windows" section for now, and WOW! It really dug in and found a TON of leftover junk sitting on my machine! Cool thing is that is scans first, so you KNOW what it's going to get rid of before it does! However, since it's just finding Temp files and such, it can all go!

Did I mention how easy this is? :)

Whew, OK that's the highlight show - this thing can do a TON of stuff for ya and - quite frankly - it's like strapping a SUPERCHARGER to your computer! It's THAT great!

Your cost for this incredible little software package? We're talking just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! If you want the most our of your computer, this is REALLY a must-have. Oh, and if your struggling with random lockups, weird errors, slow and sluggish programs - then you REALLY (really, really, really) need to give this a try! It can save the day!

Check it out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=5228

PS - This has got to be the best, most powerful way we've ever come across to optimize and tune-up your computer! Not only can it fix about a gazillion types of errors, it can make things run faster and even potentially recover TONS of hard drive space! A MUST-HAVE!

Q:
I was looking around in my Add/Remove Programs area in the Control Panel and I found something on the side that said "Set Program Access and Defaults." What does this mean and should I even mess with it?

A:
You can use this feature to change the default programs you use for certain activities you do while on your computer. For example, such activities as simply surfing the Web, sending e-mails, playing CDs or using instant messaging programs.

Now, before I go into any more detail, I need to tell you that you must have Administrator rights to use this feature. Otherwise, you won't be able to change any of your default programs and that will just defeat the whole purpose of this tip. If you're not sure how to get Administrator rights, you can read this article for some help. Also, if you use a computer that is part of a network, you must be logged in as the Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to be able to do this. The same goes for those of you who use computers that are not part of a network. You still need to be signed in as the computer's Administrator in order to change the default program settings.

Okay, once you're all set with that, go to Start, All Programs and then find the choice that says "Set Program Access and Defaults." (You can also get there by going to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. On the left hand side, you'll see the choice for "Set Program Access and Defaults"). Once you're there, you have four options to choose from. They are:

1.) You can restore your program settings to what they were when established by the manufacturer of your computer. If you want to do that, click on the Computer Manufacturer choice. Now, this option is only available if the actual manufacturer put Service Pack 1 on your computer and set allowances for those settings. (If you're not sure on that, you may want to contact your manufacturer or look for some information about it in your computer's manual).

2.) If you want to set your program defaults to fit the needs of the activities you do on your computer (like the ones I mentioned above), click on the Microsoft Windows choice. With this option, you will be able to access both Microsoft and non-Microsoft programs from your Start menu, your desktop or any other location you may choose on your computer.

3.) Now, if you want to use non-Microsoft programs as your defaults, click the Non-Microsoft choice. You can then just select the options that you want. Now, keep in mind: This configuration does remove your available access to other specified Windows programs.

4.) The last choice is to combine the non-Microsoft and Microsoft Windows options. This one is under the name of Custom, so if you'd like to do this, click it. You can then select the options you want to set for your computer. By doing a custom setting, you can pretty much do a combination of all the above choices. That includes being able to access your programs from your Start menu, your desktop and any other location you choose.

Once you have all your settings in place, click the OK button and everything will be ready. In case you were wondering, my computer is set to Custom, because with that, I have the most control over the way my programs act on my computer. You can (and should) choose for yourself, but that's my opinion. Alright, now that you know what this feature is, go and get your programs to do what you want them to do, all in a few easy clicks!

MS Office

Outlook Can Do Templates Too!

Do you find yourself sending the same or very similar messages over and over again?

I know I have… still do and it gets rather frustrating knowing that I'm repeating my work.

To avoid the repetition I'm sure that most of us have resorted to searching out an already sent message then editing a forward copy.

The method works but it can be time consuming to locate what you need and let's just hope that when you were editing you got everything changed so the new recipient isn't confused by "mismatched" information.

Instead, let's try a template. If we could have the basic message saved as a template then we could eliminate the search time and we won't have to worry about information from someone else's message being left behind.

So, here's what you need to know in order to create and use your own MS Outlook Templates.

First, we'll need a new message where we will create our template. Enter the body of the message, subject, change the font, whatever…

Once it's all set we will next need to save our template.

For people with Outlook 2007 you need the Office Button, Save As choice located in the message window.

Users of the older versions of Outlook need to use the File menu, Save As choice located in the message window.

When you go to save the file make sure to set the file type to Outlook Template.

Outlook will navigate to the correct location for saving templates so you're ready to give the template a meaningful name and click Save.

Now that you've got the template we need to know how to find it so that it can actually save us some time.

We start in Outlook's Tools menu.

From there we need the Forms submenu then the Choose Form choice.

This will open the Choose Form dialog box.

Use the drop-down list for the "Look in" field to choose User Templates in File System.

Select the template you need and click Open.

At this point I need to add an extra bit of info... if you have a signature set for every message you create then you will find that it is in the template message too. So - don't put it into the template - you'll end up with two of them and I know that's not your plan.

Anyway, with no searching, no fuss and no extra frustration the template opens as a message ready for you to finish it up and send it off.

Don't Toss Out Those Floppies!

Awesome External Floppy Drive!

Lowest Price EVER!!!!

A Must Have For All Computer Users!!

Have you noticed that most new computers don't have floppy drives? And if you want a floppy drive, you have to special order your computer! I didn't notice that until I went to put a floppy disk in my computer (after I'd had it for about a year) and couldn't find the floppy drive!!! Looking from the outside, I could imagine that this was quite entertaining for anyone that might have been watching! There I was, crawling around on the floor with a flashlight trying to find where my floppy drive was "hidden." If this was a sitcom, I could see them flashing to me every few minutes still on my hands and knee searching for this floppy drive. Unfortunately, after about a half hour, I had to accept that my computer did not have a floppy drive! Boy, did I feel like a nitwit!

But then, I began to panic ~ "How am I going to get the data off all of these floppies I have laying around?"

Well, it was a long process of using a friends computer to transfer the data to CD's (and I mean long and just plain annoying and extremely frustrating)!

I am here to save you the same trouble! We just got back in stock an awesome IBMExternal Floppy Drive! This is one device that you can't live without. It will really save you a ton of time and trouble when you need to get that valuable imformation you have saved on a floppy a few years ago!

And to use this device... let's just say it couldn't be simpler!
You just plug this baby into your USB port and viola! an instant floppy drive!
You don't even need drivers with Windows XP or Vista!

I mean, let's face it. The time will come when you really need to get data off a floppy disk and have no way of doing it (trust me, I know). Grab one of these and you'll have a floppy drive that will work on any computer with a USB port! It's also great for notebook computers ~ lightweight and compact so it's easy to store! Plus, this one comes with its own neat little case, which will keep it protected!!!

Your cost? Well, these retail for $50, but not for you :-) You get this for just $19.97 and US shipping is FREE!

I use mine all the time! Test batteries, plug sockets, circuit boards, fuses, wires, connections, automotive electronics (I use mine a LOT in that dept.) - anything! If it's electronic and it's not working, this is the only way to go! Actually, Steve just tested my wall clock (which isn't working) and the battery in it. The battery worked fine, but not the clock. Looks like it's time for me to get a new clock!

This can test both AC and DC current as well as letting you know the resistance of a circuit.
Whenever I work on a car, a house, or even a computer seems like I'm always reaching for one of these!

I tell ya, this is built like a tank, is easy to operate, really lightweight and easy to transport (or keep in a tool box), and - the biggest feature - it's VERY easy to read! Wow, Now THAT's A Smart Set Of Speakers!

Forget All The Extra Power Cords!

These Babies Are USB Powered!

Incredible Sound Too - And A Drop-Dead Price Shocker!

2-Piece USB Multimedia Speaker Set

OK, you have just GOT to check this out! These are one of the most exciting sets of speakers you'll ever own! I know, I know, what the heck could possibly have me all wound up over a pair of speakers? Well, I have had a little too much caffeine this morning, but that's really not it! These bad boys are USB powered speakers!

Why is that so special?

Well, know how your computer speakers either need to be plugged in somewhere (adding yet ANOTHER cable to get tangled up - and to eat up a spot on your power strip) or they (yuck) have to have batteries? Well, wouldn't it be GREAT if you could get a set of AWESOME sounding speakers that were 100% USB powered? Think about it - why mess with power cords - or even worse, replacing batteries every few months - when you could simply power your speaker through your USB port?

Heck, a bigger question is why didn't someone think of this sooner?!?!?

Now, being USB powered is brilliant, but if the speakers don't sound good, what's the point, right? Well, no worries! I tested these out and they are WAY better then the speakers I've been using at home! You can BET I'll be hooking these bad boys up to BOTH my home computers! Yeah, they really are THAT good!

2-Piece USB Multimedia Speaker Set

They have a great range of sound and the clarity is really, well, clear :) They sound a TON better than the speakers that came with your computer, that's for sure. Oh, and if you have speakers built into your monitor instead of regular speakers, you gotta give these a try! Wait till you hear what you've been missing!

Hey, and you can't beat the deal - we're talkin' a mind-bending price of just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! I tell ya, you just can't go wrong! For this price, you just gotta give these a shot - you'll be glad you did!

Tip of the Day

Net Guardian II – Great Service, but Is It User Friendly?

This is a follow-up to my first article on Net Guardian, which can be found here.

How can you be sure that Net Guardian will not become obsolete?

Since there are many thousands of new Web sites added to the World Wide Web everyday, Net Guardian is able to update accordingly. Net Guardian uses high-speed computers called “Mudcrawlers”, R3000 Servers, that are powerfully arrayed to ‘crawl’ sites under specific criteria. With such capability, Net Guardian is able to easily and quickly find domain and server details for specific sites/domains. Once such sites meet the criteria, a team of real people decide whether each site should be blocked or not.

Other Features of Net Guardian

Net Guardian has a profile system which is able to change the level of filtering that you will receive. When you have a profile, you will experience a temporary change of filtering level in your Internet compared to that of Net Guardian’s default filtering system.

You will have a profile name and password to authenticate your Net Guardian filtering system to temporarily unblock the unwanted sites. As long as the profile window is left open, the level of filtering can be temporarily changed so that you will be able to view blocked sites.

Upon closing the profile window, Net Guardian’s filtering system will be back to block all unwanted categories.

Note: Having a profile does not allow any access to pornographic sites at any given time.

The account name holder will be the only one who can request a profile through email at review@netguardian.co.nz.

Could Net Guardian Cause Problems for Parents?

In addition to making your children’s Web site experience a ‘clean’ one, Net Guardian has other benefits when compared to its competitors. It’s simple to use, leaving you with nothing to do, as there is no software that you need to painstakingly install or maintain. Net Guardian also is ideal for maintaining your Internet speed as it is fast enough that it does not slow down your internet access. It uses a 24/7 automatic filter update which ensures that Net Guardian really stands between your children and the World Wide Web.

Why Are Some of My Wanted Sites Blocked?

A Review Team decides whether or not a site should be blocked. This way, it ensures that the sites that are of relevant use and are not supposed to be blocked come through. For example, any legitimate site like a medical site will not be blocked. There would be very few cases when wanted sites are blocked, hampering you surfing experience.

There are several reasons why pages that should not be blocked could be blocked by Net Guardian. Among such include Virtual Hosting, which could possibly block a site that is hosted on a server which has too many hosted sites that are legitimately blocked. Another reason is when the site is classified in a category that is based on your Net Guardian service level.

Why Are Some Sites Not Blocked?

Sites that should be blocked might be very new sites running on the World Wide Web, or might be an older blocked site but changed its IP address or domain name.

What to Do If Wanted Sites Are Blocked or If Unwanted Sites Are Not Blocked?

There is a way that you can unblock such sites which are not supposed to be blocked by Net Guardian or block the sites which are no longer blocked. You can submit a request for review by the Net Guardian Block Review Team so that such sites will be reviewed. They will correspond with you as soon as possible.

Summary…

It would appear that the only down side to a completely web based service like Net Guardian, when compared to other advisory services like Net Nanny or more robust services such as Cyber Patrol or Cyber Sitter, is that it would seem to only be popularly offered via www.maxnet.co.nz and that none of the subscription levels are unlimited. Therefore, as the most qualified person to decide what is best for your children, I fervently suggest that you do your own research on these, and other such programs, by visiting The Coalition for Independent Ratings Services (www.independentratings.org/ratings) and other such sites to thoroughly review your options. Yes, it may take a little time but your children are worth every minute of it!

How to Achieve Balance in Photography

Is it possible to take a photograph concentrating on just the subject that has to be captured and forgetting the evenness and poise that goes along with it?

The question was intended to be rhetorical because it but an implicit rule in photography to have what we call ‘equipoise’ or ‘balance’.

Open the closet in your house where you store old photographs in their greying albums; shredded with time due to changes in weather and hapless handling. Pick up the worst possible photograph that you find. What are you looking for? A photograph in which there is an imposing and prominent point of interest on one side, with the rest of the field void or unfilled. In other words, an unbalanced photograph.

A good photograph doesn’t imperatively mean one in which there is equal importance given to the point of focus and the vicinity. Click a picture only when you decide on a primary target and a secondary one. The rest qualify as the background or fillers. Don’t let any space go waste in your photograph; make sure that it looks full. The entities you try and capture must fill up the photograph. If there is empty ground or skies, then change the angle at which you are taking the picture. Balance essentially means to have the background, foreground and the subject in equilibrium.

It is easy to understand the concept of balance, but you can gain expertise only with practice and time. Look for photographs that lack this evenness, and also for those that could have been a wee bit more balanced. Analyze what could have been changed when the photograph was being clicked.

This is how you must acquire the right balance in your snaps:

* Chop off the edges: Use the ‘crop’ tool and remove the unnecessary field around the main image. This processing is done only later but you can learn how you could have taken a better spot to position yourself while clicking or the angle changes. Imagine the final image before you press the button! You will save a lot of post-production review.

* Shoot from the right spot: By the trial and error method, make sure -even though that means taking several trials- that you stand at the right spot. Go closer to the object or farther. Go up or down and finally find the correct position.

* Zoom your way: Make good use of the zooming option. Obtain the exact tightness around the entity of focus without diluting its importance in the final image. Zoom out for a wide-angle shot. Do it before you open the shutter.

* Shuffle and experiment: Interchange the positions of the elements you are photographing. Rearrange and create a different scene.

Visiting photography exhibitions are a great way of exposing yourself to the various abilities that people have in this magnificent art. You will see a wide range of exceptional and outstanding photography, about which you will wonder how the judges will have to pick out just one, and also some pictures that are not good enough, and you will start thinking of what you would have done to turn it into one of those sensational ones.

Learn from mistakes that have been made before. Find as many photographs as possible with a mixture of the best ones and the bad ones. Criticize and appreciate them. Say what could have been changed at the time of photography. List out the missing elements and the ones to be altered. Get more proficient at that ‘balance’ you were looking for.

Make your own rules from seeing the best snaps, and your ‘forbidden actions’ from the bad ones! And you will be on your way!

RepliCat

This is a super fun, highly addictive game which of course means I have to share it with all of you!

The object of the game is to collect as many planets as you can without running into any of your replicas; as time passes more and more replicas spawn for you to avoid until a portal spawns to whisk you off to the next level.

The quicker you collect the planets the more points they are worth. The more points you collect the faster the portal spawns to take you to the next level.

The second level adds a bonus objective of collecting message fragments. Once you’ve collected all the fragments you have the option to save the ship they’re coming from. The second level also adds the difficulty of navigating around stationary asteroids as you avoid your replicas.

When you get to level three you find out that not only do you have to avoid the replicas but that the ship you saved is now also tailing you adding to the difficulty.

But you also learn that there is some sort of countermeasure against replicas that you can obtain through diligent navigation of the third level.

As you can tell I’m clearly hooked. This game is so much fun, and that you can replay the levels if you fail is fantastic. Check it out today, but be warned! It’s addictive!

That's over 125 absolutely fantastic multimedia presentations that show you how all the great XP features work - wait till you see what you've been missing! You'll really love how easy these terrific presentations are to follow and watch! What's exciting about this software is that you're not just reading a dull page of text; this uses engaging audio and video to explain exactly how you do something! PLUS just wait till you see how thoroughly they cover each topic - there's not a single mouse click left out of the presentation! This won't leave you guessing - it'll leave you knowing EXACTLY what to do! It's like having Bill Gates sitting next to you, going over XP step by step (only this is a little cheaper :-)!

The presentations are incredible, but ti doesn't stop there! Are you one of those people that learn better by "trying it out" on your own? Well, this has an amazing Windows XP Simulator built in! It works like this - you watch a lesson, then you can actually "try" it - just like you were using Windows, only you're not going to be able to mess anything up! How cool is that? If that's not the smartest way ever to teach Windows, I don't know what is! It's really like having a private computer tutor! Heck, you can even take a quiz at the end of the chapters to test your knowledge!

Plus, you'll really love the way the presentations progress too- they won't leave you behind scratching your head! You'll start off with the basics, then move on to more advanced topics as you learn. Of course, you can always skip back and review, but let me tell ya, as good as this software is, you probably won't need to! Plus, if you need a quick fix to a problem, you can skip to any topic at any time!
