Windows Explorer – Just Type it In! I blame Google Chrome for this, but I’m so used to being able to use the “Omni Bar” for finding stuff quickly, that I accidentally did it in Windows 7's Windows Explorer the other day. I went up to what I thought was the address bar, and actually typed in “Desktop”.
I then proceeded to test it out with a bunch of other locations on my computer – Fonts, My Documents, Music, etc. I was quickly zapped to the location on my hard drive, and anything that didn’t work opened up my browser for a web search. Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Hettie from Vancouver writes: Can Mozilla Thunderbird make a “group list” of addresses so I can send messages to specific groups? Making a group or distribution list is an important skill to have when it comes to sending the same message to multiple people on a regular basis. Even with all those people in your address book, it gets tiresome choosing them one at a time and we all know that someone always seems to be left out of the list. Ugh! So to avoid that problem we set up a distribution list – a named list of people from our contacts that we address the message to so that Thunderbird will send it to everyone you’ve designated as a member of the list. You only have to address it to a single name and you can’t possibly forget someone unless you never added them to the list. Sounds like an all-around winning situation to me, so let’s take a look. I’ll begin by stating that my instructions and pictures are coming from Thunderbird 9.0.1 so that there’s no guessing at the version. To start you’ll need to go to your address book. Once there click the New List button.
When the mailing list dialog box opens you’ll need to name your list at the top…
… and add the members of the list at the bottom. As you can see, the naming part can be very simple or more detailed depending upon how you use the 3 fields at the top. When adding members to the list simply start typing a contact’s name like you would to address a message. When either the correct address is suggested in the blue highlight or you’ve finished typing the address hit the Enter button. This will move you to the next line in order to add another person to your list. When everyone is there click OK. Voila!
In your contact list you can now see the distribution list as an entry. To edit it (add or delete members of the list) simply double-click the name in the contact list to re-open the same dialog box we used when it was first created. That’s all there is to it… one small dialog box and you’ve got endless combinations of distribution lists to meet all your needs. ~ April Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here! In Search of a Smartphone Part Four: The Phones In the fourth article in a series about the search for a smartphone, we finally get a look at phones. After examining different operating systems, I selected Android, so the phones listed here are all Android based. For a look at the first three articles, click the links below. Purchasing an Android Phone I recommend reading reviews. To me, much of the technical jargon initially seemed like gobbledygook, but, eventually the important features began to stand out. And don’t discount negative reviews. What people don’t like can be just as helpful as what they do. A browser’s find feature (see the article Ctrl+F to Search) can be an invaluable tool for scanning reviews. For example, if you’re interested in a phone with a good camera, search for the word camera. Prices vary widely, depending on where the purchase is made, and whether a plan--often a factor in the price of the phone itself--is included in the purchase. So, the phones below are judged strictly by feedback from users and professionals. Once this list was compiled, I compared prices and features. For my final choice, features won out, as the phone I chose was somewhat more expensive--at the time it was purchased--than others on the list. All phones listed here offer at least some 4G capability (see the article Cell Phone Generations for information on 2, 3, and 4G technology). Unfortunately, while there is a specific definition assigned to 4G (data exchange at 100 megabits per second), carriers apparently aren’t compelled to meet that standard in order to make the claim.

Google Site Information I’ve come to terms with the fact that Google is a benevolent Internet overlord, quietly gathering statistics and other information about the sites we visit every day. Well, today I decided to make some of that info mining work for me for a change. So, here’s a Google trick that will help you find information on a given webpage, like what pages link to it, similar pages or pages that have the web address listed somewhere on the site. All you need to do is type info:(web site name) into the Google search box. Like this: There's more tip over at Worldstart! (Want these tips in their entirety? Sign up for Premium!) Capture and Annotate Just a few days ago, my friend sent a link to my inbox. When I opened it up, I was greeted by something that looked very similar to this:
It’s a full snapshot of a webpage, complete with annotations showing me exactly what she wanted me to focus on. Of course, there was also a hyperlink to the original page on the web. I thought to myself, “Self… this is neat-o!” I mean, how many times have you sent someone a link, followed by a little message explaining the most essential part of the article or webpage? All the time, right?! This new add-on, Capture and Annotate lets you markup web pages any which way you please, and then share them fast! It fits easily right into your Firefox or Chrome browser. Get the link right here! (Want these tips in their entirety? Sign up for Premium!) For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter. I am so excited to be bringing you this site! Have you ever wanted to learn how to program? I have, and to be honest I’ve been less than satisfied with the resources I’ve found online and always end up quitting. The creators of this site were also unsatisfied with the resources available online and created Code Academy where you learn to program through interactive coding lessons. What I really love is that you can try the academy out before you sign up and you can do so directly from the main page. To get started type your name (or how you want to be addressed) inside quotation marks in the grey box; for example, I would type “Amanda” and then press enter. It will then present you with your next set of directions, keep following the directions and work your way through this example lesson on coding. Once you’ve worked your way through the lesson, the last prompt that you’ll be given is a blue link to “Start the next one”. Click that link to continue. You can work through the second lesson too without registering. By then you should have a good idea if this is something you want to learn or not. If you do want to continue click the green Register (it’s Free) button and you’ll be whisked away to the registration form. The registration form offers you the form to fill out with a working e-mail address and then you’ll have to create a password, or you can choose to f-connect and use your Facebook information to sign in. Honestly I just f-connect when I have the option, it’s so much easier than having to remember yet another username and unique password. Once you’ve signed back in, the real fun begins! Now you’ll want to click on course and then click the green Start Here arrow to begin with the introductory classes. You’ll have to work through the example lessons you did earlier again, but this shouldn’t take you long since you’re familiar with what you should be doing. You can click the Show Hint button on the left side whenever you’re stuck with a step, and now as you complete the courses you’ll earn points and badges. This is a fun and interactive way to learn to code!
