Quick Tips

A Nice Gesture

I'd heard before that Windows 7 would be incorporating mouse gestures, but aside from the Aero Shake and Snap features, I haven't been able to unearth anything else.

Until today.

So the next time you want to access the jump list for a program in the taskbar, do this:

Click on the program's taskbar icon once, hold that click and slowly drag up.

...and there's your jumplist!

I'll keep diggin' around to see if I can find more Windows 7 mouse gestures.

~Andrew

What a lovely gesture! Rate or add to this tip here! The printer-friendly version is here!

Correction!

In Friday's newsletter we ran a tip on "Backing up your My Documents folder". This was not meant as a backup tip, but as a tip to re-locate your My Documents forlder to a different physical hard drive to gain more space on your main hard drive. Sorry for the confusion - the updated tip can be found here!

Oh The Horror!

Microsoft Leaves XP & Vista Users Out In The Cold!

XP Users Can't Upgrade To Windows 7!

Even Most Vista Users Can't Do A Direct Upgrade!

Sure, You Can Use The "Upgrade" Disk But...

You'll Kiss Your Programs Goodbye -

Yikes! - And Your Files Are "Relocated"!

We Have A Solution - And It ROCKS!

Upgrade To Win 7 - And KEEP Your Programs And Files!

You'd Have To Be Crazier Than An Outhouse Rat To Miss This Deal!

Well, this is disturbing...

OK, you would LOVE to upgrade your XP computer (or Vista) to Windows 7 - After all, Win 7 is much more secure, easier to use, and is without question the best version of Windows ever. Heck, it's had record-breaking sales with 150 MILLION copies sold - that's seven copies a SECOND since its release!

Only one problem - if you're running Windows XP, you can't really upgrade to Windows 7. (And Vista users even have issues - see the site for a chart)

Sure, you can buy an "upgrade" disk, but none of your files or programs will make it to Windows 7. It's a new install, not a true upgrade - you know, the kind where you keep everything.

Kind of a "you can't get there from here" deal.

OK, you technically get to keep your files - but that doesn't even work right!

See, once you're upgraded, your files aren't where you'd expect them to be! You look under My Documents, but - hey - it's empty!

Instead, the Win7 installer dumped them in a folder called "windows.old" in the root directory of your boot drive - yeah, good luck finding what you're looking for! Oh, and then it's up to you to restore them to where they belong.

Then there's your software - Think all those program you rely on every day are going to survive the upgrade?

HA! Sorry, they're toast.

You'll have to reinstall each and every program - hope you still have all the CDs and download files (I know I don't).

Just think - hours and hours of rifling through boxes and drawers hunting for CDs, searching for registration codes, downloading updates, negotiating with publishers that you really DID buy their product - yeah, sounds like a real blast...

Should only take you a few weeks to get things back to normal. If you can.

Oh, and forget any ideas of just copying the folders your software is in to the new operating system - that never works - too many support files are scattered around Windows. In fact, nine times out of ten the program won't even run. And the tenth program runs, but doesn't work right.

Hmm... Maybe this upgrade thing wasn't such a hot idea after all...

Laplink To The Rescue!

They have an amazing program called PCMover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant and it's going to save your day (and your sanity)! This incredible software does what Microsoft refuses to - and it's made SPECIFICALLY for moving from XP or Vista to Windows 7!

It allows you to upgrade to Windows 7...

AND keep your FILES and SOFTWARE intact and where you'd expect to find them!

How cool is that?????

And it's SOOOOOOO easy!

Let's say you purchased your copy of Windows 7 Upgrade and you're ready to take the plunge. It's a quick 3 step process:

1. Simply insert the Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant disk and follow a few steps on the easy to use wizard.

2. Next, pop your new Windows 7 CD in when prompted and install.

3. Once Windows 7 is ready to go, pop your Upgrade Assistant CD back in, and restore your software and files!

It's that easy!

We tested this, and let me tell ya - it just plain WORKS!

It's so easy...

After the first couple screens, it will ask you about the files you want to migrate - you just uncheck anything you don't want! If there's stuff you don't need anymore, just uncheck it. If it missed something (say, a file you keep in a weird folder someplace), you can manually add it!

Another screen or two brings you to software. You'll get a list of software you can migrate over - and what's really cool is that YOU get to pick and choose which programs follow you over to Windows 7! So, if there's a few you never use anymore, just leave 'em unchecked! It's like a clean-up and move all at once!

From there, it backs up your files and data, you install Windows 7, then reinsert your PCMover Upgrade Assistant CD and restore ALL your stuff! Files will be where you expect to find them and your software will survive the trip too - all ready for your next command!

You'll be rockin' Windows 7 - and have all your stuff too!

Instead of days or even weeks, you'll be good to go in an hour or so!

Oh, and I'm not the only one who thinks this is fantastic. Look at the rave reviews!

Computers 101

Burt from Akron asks:
Sometimes when I hover my mouse over desktop shortcuts, additional information will show up. At other times, I can get nothing more to show than what is already on the screen. Is there a way to see the extra information any time I want to?

A:
Of course there is, And it only takes one quick left-click! How easy is that? Look at the shortcut below shown in the yellow box. As is, it only shows that it is something about RealPlayer.

The icon gives me the clue that it is probably something I saved from WorldStart, but without knowing the quick secret I’m gonna tell you, I would have to click and open it up to remember what it is about and why I even saved it. But that's way too much trouble and I want to know more without all the work!

In the second shot below, I simply left-clicked my mouse on a blank place on the desktop before hovering it over the shortcut. Now I see that the shortcut is about the basics of using RealPlayer and is indeed --- as suspected from the WS icon -- from WorldStart Computer Tips. But wait! If I hover a bit longer, I get lots more. Now I can see the WorldStart web site address, the tip sub address, and even the tip number. All from one little click! I call it the OLC Plan (One Left-Click Plan).

Remember to use the OLC Plan often to save yourself bunches of time -- time you can use playing a cool game instead. Right now I am headed out of here to go play my own favorite game, Jewel Quest II.

Tip of the Day

Install a Case Fan

There are multiple reasons as to why you'd need to install a case fan in your computer, but we can all agree that they are there for the sole purpose of making your PC all that much cooler. In my case, I'm installing a fan to keep my graphics card from overheating as my previous card had overheated and burnt out. This was probably due to lack of good airflow in the case and the amount of stress the card was under. Now, to combat this problem, I've decided to install a case fan.

Avatar Photo

This is one of the options on this site, and by far and away my favorite (check out the tabs for the other options) and it is way too funny! I’ve honestly been fooling around with this site for a couple of hours now. What you’re going to need is a nice clear, face on photo to make your avatar out of.

You can upload your photo one of two ways: click the browse button and find where it is located on your computer and open it up, or you can type in the URL from where you have your photo uploaded already (photobucket, facebook, etc).

Once you have your photo ready to go, you’ll need to select what sort of effect you want. Your options are: Emotion, Collages, Bizarre Filters, Animated Mask Effects, or Animated Frames.

After you’ve selected the effect you want, you’ll need to make some decisions. What size do you want your avatar, the default is 130 but some places only allow avatars to 100. You can also disable animation – this is very useful for the animated frames. Next you can set the number of frames the animation has, and how fast or slow you want the animation to go.

Now either save it to your hard drive or share it with the buttons below the options you were just editing. Make sure you pick either of those options or your photo will only exist there for 12 hours!

Check it out today!

Absolutely Mind-Blowin' Card Reader Deal!

Just $7.97!!! Really!

WOW!! I Think I am Speechless!!!

Now That's A Price That'll Really Make You Smile!!! :-D

If I had to name my top favorite gadgets, card readers would definitely be on the list! I have so many SD cards, that a card reader is the only way I view what is stored on any given card. I just find them so cool and convenient. And they are so much easier to use than a messy cord. However, this amazing card reader really caught my attention, and I know it will catch yours too!

First, we have never sold card reader like this for a price as low as $7.97! WOW! We have done $9.97, $10.97, heck even $16.97- but never before have we had one for a price as low as $7.97! Now that is just awesome!

Everyone with an SD (secure digital), MMC, or RS card (or any variation thereof) will just LOVE this card reader!!

Think about it, what would be easier- popping out your memory card, sliding it into the card reader, and plugging it into your USB port? Or, finding that cable that came with your device, untangling it (because you know they are always tangled), plugging it into your USB port, transferring your files, then following the cord as you go through the jungle of cords behind your computer, searching for the correct USB port and finally unplugging it? I think that answer is a real no-brainer! Of course, the card reader option is the easiest way to transfer your information from your card to your computer or vice versa!

Next, let's discuss the design! This card reader is extremely compact and lightweight, therefore, making it perfect for anyone on the go!!! And the best part is, this card reader has Plug and Play, allowing it to work on any computer without having to install anything! Better yet, because you can transfer files to and from this card reader, it will work as a flash drive too!!!

Because it uses USB 2.0, this card reader has blistering fast data transfer speed, and will definitely satisfy all your data transfer needs. This is one that you just have to check out!!! I just adore it, and for the price of just $7.97 and US Shipping is Free!
