Quick Tips

Google Maps Keyboard Controls

If anyone out there has lost hours of their lives to Google maps, then today's Quicktip is just for you!
I have a blast looking around, especially at street view, but I sometimes find myself getting a little confused at the mouse controls when I'm all zoomed in like that.

image

Well, it's a good thing you aren't constrained to using the mouse, then! Try some of these keyboard controls in to make your Google map experience a little more keyboard friendly!

Arrow keys: Move the map up, down, left or right.

+ key: Zoom in (you can use = instead of + too)
- key: Zoom out

This is a great alternative to dragging around!

Finally! A Supercharger For Your Wireless Internet Connection!

WiFi A Little Weak?

Wish You Had A Better Signal?

Have We Got An Amazing Deal For YOU!!

OK, you know how it is - you set up that new wireless router at home so you can enjoy wireless anywhere in the house. Only problem is, anywhere isn't quite right, is it? Invariably, your router ends up a little too far away from one of the computers and you have to put up with a slow, weak, crappy internet connection!

Oh, and how about when you're at a hotel that brags about having "wireless internet"? Yeah, we've all been there - they ALWAYS seem to stick you in a room that's juuusssst out of reach of that wonderful "wireless internet" they claim to have.

So, what if there was an ANTENNA you could plug into your laptop or desktop computer that would EASILY pull in those weak signals?

Well, we found one! It's a 54Mbps 802.11G adapter with a HUGE antenna!

Now, to test this, we had Mike head out of the office and down towards the road with his laptop. He tried to access the network with just the adapter built into the laptop - barely one bar and SLOOOOOW doesn't begin to describe the experience.

So, he plugs this bad boy in and BAM! He had 3 bars and WOW!! The surfin' was Ferrari fast!!

In short - this baby really WORKS!

Setup is a breeze too - it's just a wireless USB internet adapter with a powerful antenna, so just plug it into your computer, run the software, and a few minutes later you're surfing! You can be up to 1600 feet away and STILL pull in a good signal! Now THAT'S impressive!!

Plus, if you're using this in a permanent location you can actually attach it to the wall with the included hardware! They thought of everything!

Bottom line - if you are sick and tired of weak WiFi signals, it's time to stop the slow, spotty connections and enjoy wicked fast internet again!

Your price? Just $29.97 and US shipping is FREE! Heck, you can't buy a standard wireless internet adapter from the big box stores for that kind of money, let alone the superhero of internet adapters!

WARNING - Don't miss out - we have a seriously low quantity on this one!

Computers 101

Kim from OH asks:
I was typing along in MS Word and all of a sudden I'm typing over stuff. What gives?

A:
Have you ever gone back to change a thing or two while typing and instead of moving the text to the right to accommodate the space, the text was overwritten? You probably ended up having to re-type an entire paragraph because of it.

Sounds like you were a victim of the Insert key!

Somehow during the course of your typing, a stray finger accidentally tapped the Insert key. Normally, you can squeeze words between other words with no problem.Tap that Insert key, and you'll overwrite instead of insert. Next time that happens, just tap the Insert key again to get back to normal.

MS Office

MS Office 2007: It's None of Your Business (Password Protect Your Word, Excel and PowerPoint Files)

Sometimes we're looking to lock down a file in order to keep others out... not just a “don't change it” thing but more of a “none of your business” situation.

In the vein of “better safe than sorry” I believe that it's a good idea to know how to make that happen, just in case you find yourself needing to keep others out of sensitive information.

The good news is that for Office 2007 one set of directions covers Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Amanda's Coolsite

Cake Nouveau

I started working this summer at the college I attend, and my partner in crime on Saturdays also happens to bake wedding cakes in her free time. She showed me this site because the wedding cakes here really inspire her in her own work.

Once I saw this cake gallery, I knew I had to share it with all of you. These cakes are amazing! And you know how much I love cake! I suggest that you click the Most Recent Cakes and click on the giraffe cake. It is my absolute favorite cake in the gallery.

My next favorite cake is on page 5, and is the Buffy cake. I love the stake through the top layer, and how she created the dripping wax candle, and how she included the Mutant Enemy logo. Just fantastic cake right there, absolutely fantastic!

I really appreciate that these cakes are meant to be looked at as art first, and then devoured for their deliciousness. They look quite delectable.

There are a lot of gorgeous cakes on this site, so be sure to look through all five galleries. And then if you really want to make your mouth water, just click the Virtual Tasting link at the bottom of the page. Yummy!
