Quick Tips

Change Windows Explorer Default Folder

Windows 7 users know that when they go to their Windows Explorer, the first window that opens up is for Libraries. Well, that’s fine and dandy, but what if I want to start off someplace else? What then?

Today we’re going to learn how to change all that. So locate your Windows Explorer icon on your taskbar, or type Windows Explorer into your Search Box. Either way, right-click the Windows Explorer icon and select Properties.

Under the Shortcut tab, focus your attention to the text input box next to Target:

Simply type the address of the folder you want Windows Explorer to start in after the %windir%\explorer.exe. So, for example, mine would look like this:

Note: An easy way to select a new default location is to browse to the location, right click in the address bar, select Copy address as text and paste in the Target box.

After your new default folder location is in, click Apply then OK.

Now open up Window Explorer again and take a look at where you’re at! If you ever want to go back to the original location, simply follow the same steps and delete just the location address you inputted.

Awesome!

Whatever You Do - Don't Buy An External Hard Drive!

Make One Yourself And Save BIG!

Super Easy! Anyone Can Do It!

Great Way To Give Your Old Hard Drives A Reason To Live!

I'm so excited! We just got a jaw-droppin' deal on some do-it-yourself External Hard Drive Cases! I've used these in the past (a lot, actually), and I've saved literally HUNDREDS over buying the "prefab" deals at the stores! Super easy too - my 7 year old can do it!

OK, so how's this work anyway? Glad you asked! Really easy - we sell you this great little case, you take an internal Hard Drive (IDE connection) and just plug it in. Put the case back together (a few screws - not hard), then plug it in! That's it! When you plug it into your computer's USB port windows will AUTOMATICALLY install the drive and list it under MyComputer! It's just like plugging in a GIANT flashdrive! It's THAT easy!

From there, just use it like any other drive! It's an absolutely fantastic idea for extra storage or backups!

PLUS, like I say, this can save a TON on money! There are two ways to do this - The first is to watch for a sale on internal Hard Drives at your local electronics store. You can get HUGE drives for less than $100 all day long! I've seen them for less than $40 after rebates and such! You get them for WAY less than external drives since you're not buying some snazzy case.

The second way these save you money is letting you give new life to old hard drives! You know how it is - you have that old computer sitting in your closet - there's nothing on it you need anymore, it's really not worth anything, but you're worried about throwing it away. Why not salvage it's old HD and stick it into this handy case? You instantly have an external HD - for less than $20!

Now, I know you may be a little worried about having to assemble something like this, but trust me, it's easy. If you've ever used a screwdriver and plugged a lamp into the wall, you're qualified! You simply take any IDE drive up to 750GB, plug in the power cord (inside the case), then just push it into place! A few screws later and the case is assembled! I put mine together in less than 5 minutes! Really! Still not sure? I'll make you a deal - if you can't figure it out, you can call out tech support and they'll walk you though it!

OK, ready for the deal? We have these on sale today for just $19.97 and US shipping is FREE! This can save you TONS of money on external drives! Easy to do, cheap, and quick! Grab one, grab a dozen - for this kind of money you just can't go wrong! Don't forget that today when you order your External Hard Drive Enclosure, you'll get 2 Integra Mechanical Pencils absolutely FREE!!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/5306

PS - It's never been easier - or cheaper - to make your own external HD! PLUS - if down the road you decide the drive you started with is too small, you can always just take this apart and "upgrade" it yourself in a few minutes! Don't miss out!

Don't Forget - with any shipped order* you get 2 FREE Integra Mechanical Pencils, while supplies last!!

Computers 101
Bernie from California asks:
I belong to several "groups" and many times things come to me that have been forwarded many times and there are all of those lines to the left of the text and pictures, my two questions are is there a proper name for those lines, and what is the best way to get rid of them. I am on Yahoo, most of the time and am running Explorer 8.

Answer:
Yes, Bernie. I believe you are referencing a character called the caret. These little buggers always clog up forwarded emails.
To answer this one, I'm going to reach into the Worldstart Download archives and recommend a program called The Cleaner. All it does is clean up text. Read below for the details!

Download of the Week: The Cleaner

This free utility for cleaning up your e-mail is extremely popular.

You know the drill. You get an e-mail from someone and it's full of carets (>>>), badly formatted, and basically a mess.

Well, copy and paste that badly formatted text into this utility, click the smily face, and it will remove all those carets and attempt to rebuild the paragraphs (it really does an amazing job).

Again, this is 100% free and seems to work under all versions of Windows.

It's about a half meg in size, so it will download quickly (dial up modems should have it in less than 5 minutes). Here's the download link:

MS Office
OpenOffice: It's All About The Keys

Many people much prefer using key combinations over the mouse when completing their work.

Some just find that it takes way too much time to keep removing their hand from the keyboard to accomplish something with the mouse. Mostly I agree, it seems that 9 times out of 10 things move faster when I know the key combinations to work with.

At any rate, if this is you then you may be wondering how you can find the key combinations that are used in OpenOffice.

Tip of the Day
Question:
Lil from MI asks: I use AOL. I would like to set my font size to be larger on Emails. Every time I write an email I must set it larger manually. Please tell me how I can correct this problem. It always goes back to the smaller setting.

Answer:
Yes, there is a way to keep your font the same size while writing an email without having to change it back every time you hit the space bar, enter, or another key.

1. Login to AOL and find the Settings Link located at the top of the screen on the right hand side.

How to photograph houses

Driving through neighborhoods and taking snapshots of houses is not a hobby enjoyed my many, but there are occasions for getting a good photograph of your home. This could be a house you’re trying to sell, or a prospective house that you would be interesting in buying. Compiled here for you are a few tips on how to make the house you’re shooting come across the best, in areas of size, lighting and atmosphere.

Tidy Up
You might say this is obvious but I am always astonished at house photos with unkempt gardens and weeds poking out from between the paving slaps. If you spend ten minutes tops just having a sweep, mop and general tidy it will save you hours of plucking away with the Photoshop tool.

Able Gamers

I'm a gamer. I adore video games whether they are on my PC or a console. I love them whether they're strategy, action, rpg, puzzle,  or simply fun time wasters. When I discovered this site it opened my eyes up to a world of gaming I never thought about. The site reviews video games from the angle of accessibility to people who are disabled.

I highly recommend that you check out the About Us section, because they not only tell you what they're all about but give you interesting information on the percentage of gamers out there who are disabled. When they say that more than likely someone you game with has some form of disability – that caught my attention right away, because I run a guild in the game World of Warcraft and we have two disabled gamers among us. One gamer has RSD, (Reflex sympathetic dystrophy) and another gamer has FOP (fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive) both of which are fairly painful conditions. My guild is like my second family, so you can see why this is near and dear to my heart.

To check out their reviews, click Reviews on their navigation strip at the top of the page. This will take you to page where you have the option of looking at games on certain platforms, or the hardware of the platform itself.

You’ll notice for the games they review there is a check card. On the check card you’ll find: Precision, Deaf Gamers, One-handed, Other Alerts, Subtitled, and Color Blind. A game can score in each of these areas. The games are also given an overall score from 1-10, with ten being the best. There will be a link to jump down the page to the main review of the game. In the text review you’ll get all the gritty details about the game and its ease of use by someone disabled.

On the main page you'll find a lot of great information from the featured articles and news. You’ll also be able to learn about featured gamers. When I was visiting it was Carol from Cincinnati, Ohio; who plays games and they actually have helped eased her symptoms.

I hope this is a site you’ll pass on! I'm sharing it with you and with everyone important in my life!
