Quick Tip

Babs from RI asks:

What is an HTML document?

The short answer – it’s a web page. You see, web pages are nothing more than another type of document. In fact, they’re really nothing more than a page of text instructions that your web browser reads.

So what exactly is this HTML?

HTML is short for Hyper Text Markup Language . It’s the programming language of web pages (technically, HTML is not a programming language, but it’s the best way to explain it).

HTML gives your web browser instructions on how to display the HTML document (web page) you’re accessing.

If you would like to take a peek at this HTML stuff, open Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome and head to your favorite site. From the view menu, select Page Source or View Source (depending on your browser and version).

It's A FACT - YOUR Hard Drive Will Eventually FAIL!

It's NOT a Matter of IF - It's a Matter of WHEN...

If It's Not Backed Up - You Lose EVERYTHING Forever!

Amazing Program Makes an EXACT Copy of Your Hard Drive...

And Will FULLY 100% Restore Your Computer After a Crash! FAST!

Software, Files, Programs, Windows, and Everything Else Will Be Saved!

Laplink DiskImage

Ever Wish You Could Travel Back in Time?

We've all had instances in our lives where we'd give anything to be able to go back and do something from the past differently.  Maybe you missed the lotto jackpot by one number.  Maybe you turned down what would have been a life-changing opportunity...

Or maybe your computer crashed and you lost everything - WHEN ALL YOU NEEDED WAS A SIMPLE BACK-UP PROGRAM AND EVERYTHING COULD HAVE BEEN RECOVERED - Files, software, programs, everything on your hard drive!

Well LapLink Disk Image is kinda like a time machine - it allows you to capture your entire hard drive on a disk as an image, and should you ever experience a crash, you just install the disk and EVERYTHING goes back to normal - your software, files, music, pictures: you name it, it'll all be there!

You just can't understand how awesome this is until a system crash inevitably happens to you - you won't believe how easy it can be to restore everything on your hard drive with this one amazing program!

Guess What? It Happened To Me - Windows Died.

Yep, me - the one whose ALWAYS telling people how important it is to back everything up no matter what.  So, did I end up eating my words?  Do I have egg on my face?  NOPE.  I used LapLink Disk Image, baby!  That system crash picked the WRONG computer to mess with!

See, my Windows 7 did the old crash & burn - it happens to everyone sooner or later.  It was completely crippled.  My data was gone.  My programs disappeared.  My system needed to be COMPLETELY restored.  Now, there's a few ways you can go about doing this, and they all go badly.  Very, very badly.

It's Not a Matter of IF - It's a Matter of WHEN!

Hard drives are mechanical.  They spin.  It's 100% GURANATEED that eventually, your computer is going to crash.  Just like it's inevitable that your car will need repairs eventually.  And when it does crash...You lose EVERYTHING!

A Computer Crash Can Be DEVASTATING...

And what's worse?  It's nearly impossible to restore it back to where it was before the crash.  Your data is completely gone - photos, documents, music, financial records, e-mails - everything in your digital life is just plain gone!

Oh, and what about your software? You can spend DAYS trying to locate and reinstall your old software!  Months, even! But after all that hard work, you're almost guaranteed not to have everything you did before the crash.

And good luck trying to recover those old serial numbers to prove that you indeed bought that software at some point. Who just keeps that stuff lying around?  Nope - if your computer crashes, you're gonna burn...

Let's face it: a system crash is inevitable at some point. Be it in the form of a crash, malware or a virus. What's going to happen to all of your files, software and programs?  How long will it take you to recover and reinstall everything?  How much money would it end up costing you?  It's going to be a miserable experience...

Unless you have LapLink Disk Image, of course. Then everything is fine!

Computer Crashes No Longer Mean a Thing!

Before we get to any of the specifics with this program, there's a couple of things you should know: this program is very easy to use (anyone can do it) and the bottom line is this:

LapLink Disk Image makes an EXACT copy (image) of your hard drive. If your PC crashes and you've used this program first, you can restore EVERYTHING back to the way it was when you did the backup by sticking the disc in and letting it do it's thing!

This image can be created on another hard drive, an external drive, a zip drive, a set of CD's or DVD's - whatever works for you.  It's fast and couldn't be easier to use - IT RUNS DIRECTLY THROUGH WINDOWS!

That's right: software, files, programs, pictures, music...EVERYTHING!

Whether you accidentally downloaded a terrible virus, are experiencing a massive PC crash, got a ton of malware, have a PC that won't start - whatever - if you've used Disk Image, you'll have access to everything you backed up before your PC kicked that digital bucket.

Restore Individual Files!

This is TOO cool!  Disk Image allows you to restore individual files as needed!

Let's just say you accidentally deleted an important file.  Or somehow, you managed to corrupt a bunch of pictures you had saved on your computer.  Disk Image allows you to restore ANY file you want - YOU get to pick and choose!

Simply pop your disk in and choose which file to reinstall.  It's laid out right in front of you, and it's a quick and easy process.  No matter what happens to your files, hardware, pictures - whatever - you can rest assured that it's safely backed-up and ready to be reinstalled whenever you need to!

Creating Back-Ups has NEVER Been Easier!

Maybe you just got a new computer and want to bring certain things over from your old one - no problem!  Disk Image lets  you pick and choose!  And let's say you just bought yourself some EXPENSIVE new hardware.  Install it and copy it with ease!  Now it's backed up in case anything at all should happen to it!

And speaking of getting a new computer...maybe you're not aware, but most newer computer's don't come with a Windows restore disk anymore! Nope, the almighty dollar must be more important to them than customer get ready to shell out an extra 40 bucks on top of that new computer cost.  OR use Disk Image - and restore windows on all your programs on your computer!

Look at that - this program has already paid for itself!

Added Bonus: Makes Adding A Larger Hard Drive Super-EASY!

Eventually you're going to run out of hard drive space.  This happens to pretty much everybody, that's why external HD's are sold everywhere. Now, maybe a better idea would be to actually just put in a new, larger hard drive - but that's normally the kind of thing that would even give Stephen King nightmares!

Ahh, but if you have Disk Image, it's a snap! Just create an image of your current system onto the new drive and BINGO - Install the new drive and everything is just like it was before the upgrade - except now you have all the extra space! Sweet!

I'd say this alone is more than worth the cost of the program!

Talk About a BRILLIANT Program - Just Look at these Features!

Let's just sum this up, shall we?  This might seem like a big bad program, but trust me - it's simple to use, powerful, and it WILL save you time, money and sanity!  Check it out:

Makes an EXACT replica of the data on your PC!
Allows you to restore ANY AND ALL of your programs and data!
Optional Boot CD - repair & restore everything even if Windows won't start!
More Options: create FULL or PARTIAL disk images - it's entirely up to you!
This program allows you to burn the saved image to any disc: CD's OR DVD's!

THE BEST PART: It's EXTREMELY user friendly with a simple-to-follow wizard!  Anyone can use this amazing program with ease!

Computers 101

Cheryl from OH writes:

A friend of mine told me she turns her monitor off, but leaves her tower run at night. Is there an advantage to this?

The practice of leaving a computer on, but turning the monitor off is mostly used in the office/corporate environment, because many updates/system upgrades are done by IT departments later on at night when the PCs are on, but very few (if anyone) is in the office. While Windows does automatically schedule some system tasks (like disk defragmenter) to run late at night, it’s not the best idea to leave your tower on all the time.

turning off pc=time+money

Why not? If companies do it, then it can’t be too bad, right?

1.) Money. If your PC consumes 150 watts of power while it’s on –  and let’s say you use it for a total of 8 hours during the day – then the remaining 16 hours in the day uses 2400 watts of extra power. Over the course of a year that’s 876,000 watts of power. Let’s say your average cost per kilowatt-hour for electricity is 14.9 cents. That would total $130.52 over the course of a year of wasted money.

2.) Wear and tear on the computer. A computer contains many different kinds of components, some which have almost infinite lifespans, and others which have limited lifespans. A hard drive, for example, spins and has only an average number of hours of spinning before the motor normally fails.

This MTBF (mean time between failure) is usually quite long, but the more hours the hard drive is up and spinning the less hours it has left. Your computer also has ball bearing fans that cool the various system components (which also have motors) and the more air they move the more dust they collect. All of these considerations lower the total time the computer is likely to run for and increase the risk of failure.

Are these reasons enough to turn off your PC at night? It depends on what you value. If you’re someone who prefers the instant on response of a PC which is always ready, then it may be worth the $130 a year plus extra wear-and-tear. If you don’t mind waiting a little for the computer to boot up, then you may want to turn it off every night when you’re done using it.

P.S. A good middle ground is the hibernate function, which writes everything in your computer to the hard drive and turns off your computer. Once you power it back on, Windows restarts right where you were. You gain the ability to go right back to what you were doing without leaving the PC on all night. The downside is it’ll take Windows time to boot back up and load back to where you were – about a minute or two.

iPad / iOS Basics Part 2 – Making Folders, Pausing Downloads, and Uninstalling Apps
Now that you know how to reposition your App icons on your Home Screen / dock in the first article, it’s time to take a look at a couple more advanced App/App icon organizational options:

Grouping Apps into Folders

Having tens, if not hundreds, of App icons floating around on multiple Home Screens can quickly become a hassle as you attempt to sort through page after page of Apps to find the one you need right now. While re-ordering your icons as discussed in our previous article will certainly help, if your app collection is especially large you will likely need a method of organizing your Apps into specific groups – you need Folders.

To create a folder group containing multiple apps within, follow these simple steps:

Improving the Windows 7 Taskbar Preview Response Time

Windows 7 has taken the Aero interface to the next level and has pushed the hardware industry to deliver a certain standard, so that they can handle this new Windowing system from Microsoft. Aero was quite notorious in the days of Windows XP, and I remember many of my friends spoiling their computers in an attempt to try out the Aero interface with the Longhorn Transformation pack.

Things are different now, and we can run Windows Vista and Windows 7 with ease. Both of these operating systems have Aero as not just a visual feature, but have also brought some interesting usability with the Aero interface.

Dennis from NY writes:

A new program has appeared on my computer called “Rapport”.  Don’t know where this came from or what it is. Can you help?

Hi, Dennis.  Thanks for the question.

Rapport is a security program, developed by a company called Trusteer, for use by financial institutions on their websites as well as e-commerce sites to provide an extra layer of security for their online transactions.

Amanda's Coolsite

I have fond memories of building things with blocks as a kid. Whether they were wooden blocks or something fancier like Legos or Tinker Toys, they encouraged my mind to create things. I was looking for a block building set for a friend when I found this site among the search results. After checking it out –  and seeing that it was a site that provided an online version of building with blocks – I couldn’t wait to try what I inadvertently stumbled across!

There are some links on the main page you might want to investigate before diving right in. They are the Official Blockcorner Quickstart Guide (a must read), the FAQ page, and you’ll want to check and make sure you have the Shockwave plugin (note: I didn’t have it and clicked the link to start building and it automatically downloaded for me). When you’re ready to begin, just click the Go into the Blockcorner link.

What I like about this is combines basic programming (why you should read the Quickstart Guide) and allows you to play with building blocks at the same time. This is a great and fun way to introduce kids to programming, or to start to dabble in it yourself.

I hope you have fun with this foray into programming and block building! I know I did!
