Your Weekly Update In The World Of (Olympics) Technology

London 2012

Once every four years countries worldwide align in the summer to decide who’s the best at table tennis, synchronized swimming, and bouncing on a trampoline (and I guess some other sports too).  If Dick Vitale were part of the broadcast crew, he’d say “It’s the OLYMPICS, baby!”  It’s also no secret that with our ever-advancing technological world, the Olympics are keeping up to date with their own use of technology.  So let’s take a look at this week’s news in technology from an Olympic point of view…

Wi-Fi Police

Say Hello To The Wi-Fi Police

One rule that London set in place for the 2012 Olympics was the complete ban on 3G Wi-FI hotspots at all Olympic venues.  The Wi-Fi hotspots use 3G networks to create a Wi-Fi signal for other devices.  Unfortunately this can cause a serious problem at the venues due to interference.  The technology at the events, such as timing devices and cameras, often rely on wireless signals to transmit their data.   The Wi-Fi hotspots can get in the way of those signals.

London is taking the rule seriously too.  Of course there are people that don’t listen, so London brought in these guys (see image above).  They carry a device around that sniffs out those hotspots and shuts them down.   The device is a directional antenna that traces interference sources.  The fact that’s a super large red arrow is even better.  “You there… yes you, I’m pointing at you with my comically large arrow… no Wi-Fi for you!”

Twitter Gold

Twitter Gets Gold For Being A Serious Pain In London’s Neck

Before the Olympics even started, many people were calling 2012 to be the Olympics of Twitter.  The social networking site was going to be filled to capacity with tweets that were Olympic in nature.  We’d share results, excitement, and more… but it turned out to be more than the games organizers were ready for.

First, the criticisms.  NBC, the network that holds the rights for broadcasting the Olympics, have been met with with fierce criticism over the times they’re showing events (tape delaying medal events for prime time) and even over their announcers.  In fact, Twitter even shut down a critic’s account due to violating the site’s terms (he was later reinstated).  The hashtag #NBCFail is constantly trending on Twitter.

Then athletes took to Twitter to vent their frustrations, and in some unfortunate moments threw out racist comments.  A Greek athlete has already been kicked out of the games due to their comments.

Then London stepped in and essentially said to stop using Twitter unless it was ‘urgent.’  They stated that the large amount of tweets going out, which also include GPS geo-locations, was interfering with the GPS communications systems during one of the cycling road race events.

One thing is for sure, however.  People haven’t stopped using Twitter, and the Olympics are not even half over yet.

See, when it comes to earbuds, a LOT of people mistakenly think that all of 'em are pretty much created equal - and that's about as far away from the truth as you can get!

I'm here to tell you that listening to your music with cheap earbuds is like listening to your music in a GARBAGE CAN - At least that's what you'll think of your old earbuds once you try these!

Here's the problem - Since great earbuds tend to be expensive, most people have never treated their ears to a GREAT set of earbuds.

They foolishly think, "Gee, how much better could they be?"

So, they go through life only experiencing the el-cheapo earbuds, never knowing the extraordinary acoustic treat they're missing out on!

And it's a shame really - once you try a great set of earbuds, you'll never torture your ears with the cheap ones.

Well, I'm here to break the price barrier and make your ears happier than they ever been!

It's like the difference between B&W TV and HD TV!

I kid you not - the first time I tried these I was FLOORED!

I thought they'd sound a little better than my other earbuds but I was totally unprepared for the richness and clarity of sound I was hearing!

Seriously - You'll wonder if you're dreaming when you pop these in - your music never sounded so good!

Oh, just wait till you feel how comfortable these are!

EASILY the most comfortable earbuds you'll ever experience!

In fact, these ultra-high end earbuds come complete with 3 different sizes of ear cup for an "EXTREME COMFORT" perfect fit! Now that's thinking!

How To Add A Printer To Your Mac

What I love about using a Mac is that I can connect to any printer I want and print in about 30 seconds – no software to install or 45 minute wait to install the drivers. Apple, always thinking, put some software on the Mac which makes it compatible with almost any printer you’ll need to use.

This tutorial is the same for both wired, wireless and network printers.

If you are using a wired printer, make sure it is plugged in to your Mac. If you are using a wireless printer, make sure it is switched on and both your Mac and the printer are connected to the network. If you have a printer on your network, which may be connected through an Ethernet cable, make sure that it is connected to your network and switched on as well.

To setup a printer on your Mac:

First, open system preferences on your Mac.

Mac System Preferences

Select Print & Scan from the menu:

Select the plus (+) sign on the left hand side of printer window:

You will then see your Mac search for active printers that are either connected to your Mac or on the network.

Once it has found your printer select it and press the add button:

Once that has been added, you are ready to start printing from your Mac. Easy as that!

So next time you want to print something, select file from the top menu, then print, from the drop down menu which says “Printer” you will be able to select the printer that you have just added to your Mac and then print directly to it without the hassle of drivers or software to install.

MS Excel: Customizing Error Checking

I’m sure you’ve noticed by now the Error button that pops up whenever Excel’s Error Checking feature thinks that there may be something wrong with a cell’s contents.

When I say “wrong” I mean lots of different types of “wrong” – not just a formula issue.

For certain users it’s possible that the way they use Excel tends to trigger the Error button to present itself (not to mention all those cells with the little colored triangle in the upper left corner).

If that’s you… way too many “errors” are marked that are not really errors… and you’d like to put an end to as much of it as possible, then it’s good to know that you can tailor some of the setting the Error Checker uses or even turn it off completely.

The first way to control the behavior of the Error Checker is to utilize the Ignore Error choice in the Error button list.

Amanda's Coolsite

I always wanted to be a writer. When I was little, I told my grandmother I was going to be a journalist and carried around a tiny notebook and interviewed my family members. When I was eleven or so I started writing poetry, and by the time I graduated high school my goal was to go into creative writing and write books for a living. Right about the same time my life took a major detour away from that plan – but I still wrote creatively for myself.

When I went back to school, I had to start writing academically (in addition to finding fun sites to write up and share with you), and that creative writing got put on the back burner. Now that I’m in my last year of undergrad, and I’ve left mostly with general education classes, the itch to write creatively has been flaring up – although it’s been full of stops and starts. So, I’ve been looking for ways to start practicing my creative writing in small doses. A friend from a writing encouragement group I’m in suggested I give this site a try, and once I did, I knew I had to share it with you!

To Sign Up for your free account all you have to do is click the Sign Up button and make a decision. You can choose to connect with Facebook or Twitter, or use your e-mail address. I used the Facebook option, because it’s easier for me. If you go the Facebook route you’ll need to click the Facebook button, approve the app, and then create a password when prompted (as well as provide your birth date), then click the the box for the Terms of Service, and click the Sign Up button. I don’t use Twitter, but I’m going to guess it is the same as the Facebook process.

Once you’ve confirmed your account and are logged in it will suggest you invite your friends, I always skip this. Instead, I headed up to the top of the page and clicked Edit My Profile and then the Q & A tab, which offers up some questions for you to answer about yourself. The profile section also lets you organize your bookshelf on the site, and manage the social media sites you are connected to.

After you’ve updated your profile you have two options of things to do on the site. You can read or you can write. The navigation bar is divided between these two activities, with the reading and forum options on the light grey half and the writing options on the dark grey half. Before getting started in either section I’d suggest checking out the FAQ.. I didn’t, and it would have answered a lot of the questions that I had trying to acquaint myself with the site.

Reading – if you want to read other people’s writing I’d suggest starting on the Figment Library page and either selecting a story featured there or using the handy search engine field. You can type a keyword into it or you can leave it blank just select a genre category from the drop down box to see what titles are under that category. Because the entries are all short, you can read many things (it will even list the average time it takes to read it) on one visit. Like the entry you’re reading? Well, you can share it over Facebook, Twitter, e-mail it, heart it, comment on it, and even review it. You can also flag inappropriate posts, too.

Writing – this is what I came here for! Go to the My Desk section and click the Create Something New button. Give your writing a working title and you’ll be whisked away to the text box where you can start writing.  In need of some help getting started? Why not try to write something for one of the contests? Or head to the forum and check out the threads there for ideas (like the Writing Scraps thread). Best of all you can keep your writing private, share it with only the people you allow, or make it public. There’s no minimum or maximum word count either. You’re in complete control!

Whether you’re an avid reader or a writer you’ll find plenty do at Figment, so go get started today!

One More Big Deal

Disk Image

Ever Wish You Could Travel Back in Time?

We've all had instances in our lives where we'd give anything to be able to go back and do something from the past differently.  Maybe you missed the lotto jackpot by one number.  Maybe you turned down what would have been a life-changing opportunity...

Or maybe your computer crashed and you lost everything - WHEN ALL YOU NEEDED WAS A SIMPLE BACK-UP PROGRAM AND EVERYTHING COULD HAVE BEEN RECOVERED - Files, software, programs, everything on your hard drive!

Well LapLink Disk Image is kinda like a time machine - it allows you to capture your entire hard drive on a disk as an image, and should you ever experience a crash, you just install the disk and EVERYTHING goes back to normal - your software, files, music, pictures: you name it, it'll all be there!

You just can't understand how awesome this is until a system crash inevitably happens to you - you won't believe how easy it can be to restore everything on your hard drive with this one amazing program!

Guess What? It Happened To Me - Windows Died.

Yep, me - the one whose ALWAYS telling people how important it is to back everything up no matter what.  So, did I end up eating my words?  Do I have egg on my face?  NOPE.  I used LapLink Disk Image, baby!  That system crash picked the WRONG computer to mess with!

See, my Windows 7 did the old crash & burn - it happens to everyone sooner or later.  It was completely crippled.  My data was gone.  My programs disappeared.  My system needed to be COMPLETELY restored.  Now, there's a few ways you can go about doing this, and they all go badly.  Very, very badly.

It's Not a Matter of IF - It's a Matter of WHEN!

Hard drives are mechanical.  They spin.  It's 100% GURANATEED that eventually, your computer is going to crash.  Just like it's inevitable that your car will need repairs eventually.  And when it does crash...You lose EVERYTHING!

A Computer Crash Can Be DEVASTATING...

And what's worse?  It's nearly impossible to restore it back to where it was before the crash.  Your data is completely gone - photos, documents, music, financial records, e-mails - everything in your digital life is just plain gone!

Oh, and what about your software? You can spend DAYS trying to locate and reinstall your old software!  Months, even! But after all that hard work, you're almost guaranteed not to have everything you did before the crash.

And good luck trying to recover those old serial numbers to prove that you indeed bought that software at some point. Who just keeps that stuff lying around?  Nope - if your computer crashes, you're gonna burn...

Let's face it: a system crash is inevitable at some point. Be it in the form of a crash, malware or a virus. What's going to happen to all of your files, software and programs?  How long will it take you to recover and reinstall everything?  How much money would it end up costing you?  It's going to be a miserable experience...

Unless you have LapLink Disk Image, of course. Then everything is fine!

Computer Crashes No Longer Mean a Thing!

Before we get to any of the specifics with this program, there's a couple of things you should know: this program is very easy to use (anyone can do it) and the bottom line is this:

LapLink Disk Image makes an EXACT copy (image) of your hard drive. If your PC crashes and you've used this program first, you can restore EVERYTHING back to the way it was when you did the backup by sticking the disc in and letting it do it's thing!

This image can be created on another hard drive, an external drive, a zip drive, a set of CD's or DVD's - whatever works for you.  It's fast and couldn't be easier to use - IT RUNS DIRECTLY THROUGH WINDOWS!

That's right: software, files, programs, pictures, music...EVERYTHING!

Whether you accidentally downloaded a terrible virus, are experiencing a massive PC crash, got a ton of malware, have a PC that won't start - whatever - if you've used Disk Image, you'll have access to everything you backed up before your PC kicked that digital bucket.

Restore Individual Files!

This is TOO cool!  Disk Image allows you to restore individual files as needed!

Let's just say you accidentally deleted an important file.  Or somehow, you managed to corrupt a bunch of pictures you had saved on your computer.  Disk Image allows you to restore ANY file you want - YOU get to pick and choose!

Simply pop your disk in and choose which file to reinstall.  It's laid out right in front of you, and it's a quick and easy process.  No matter what happens to your files, hardware, pictures - whatever - you can rest assured that it's safely backed-up and ready to be reinstalled whenever you need to!

Creating Back-Ups has NEVER Been Easier!

Maybe you just got a new computer and want to bring certain things over from your old one - no problem!  Disk Image lets  you pick and choose!  And let's say you just bought yourself some EXPENSIVE new hardware.  Install it and copy it with ease!  Now it's backed up in case anything at all should happen to it!

And speaking of getting a new computer...maybe you're not aware, but most newer computer's don't come with a Windows restore disk anymore! Nope, the almighty dollar must be more important to them than customer get ready to shell out an extra 40 bucks on top of that new computer cost.  OR use Disk Image - and restore windows on all your programs on your computer!

Look at that - this program has already paid for itself!

Added Bonus: Makes Adding A Larger Hard Drive Super-EASY!

Eventually you're going to run out of hard drive space.  This happens to pretty much everybody, that's why external HD's are sold everywhere. Now, maybe a better idea would be to actually just put in a new, larger hard drive - but that's normally the kind of thing that would even give Stephen King nightmares!

Ahh, but if you have Disk Image, it's a snap! Just create an image of your current system onto the new drive and BINGO - Install the new drive and everything is just like it was before the upgrade - except now you have all the extra space! Sweet!

I'd say this alone is more than worth the cost of the program!

Talk About a BRILLIANT Program - Just Look at these Features!

Let's just sum this up, shall we?  This might seem like a big bad program, but trust me - it's simple to use, powerful, and it WILL save you time, money and sanity!  Check it out:

Makes an EXACT replica of the data on your PC!
Allows you to restore ANY AND ALL of your programs and data!
Optional Boot CD - repair & restore everything even if Windows won't start!
More Options: create FULL or PARTIAL disk images - it's entirely up to you!
This program allows you to burn the saved image to any disc: CD's OR DVD's!

THE BEST PART: It's EXTREMELY user friendly with a simple-to-follow wizard!  Anyone can use this amazing program with ease!
