 Curiosity Rover

Conquering Mars

For those of us who haven’t been looking to the stars these last couple of weeks, some big news has happened at our closest planetary neighbor.  NASA’s Curiosity rover landed successfully on Mars on August 6 to the joy of many NASA scientists as well as people that want the question “is/was there life on Mars?” answered.

The Curiosity rover, which has a price tag of only $2.6 billion, used a parachute and sky crane to land its 2,000-pound frame on the red planet’s surface.  In fact, it missed its landing mark by only 1.5 miles, which is actually pretty remarkable.  The rover will now spend years moving about the planet while taking photos and gathering other scientific data.

Curiosity has sent back some amazing photos so far and more are sure to come.  The Curiosity craze is still in full swing here on Earth as the rover has hit the apex of pop culture — it’s own Twitter account. @MarsCuriosity

Texting While Driving

AT&T Wants You To Take The No-Text Pledge

AT&T is really putting the pressure on its customers, and all phone users, to stop texting while driving.  Recently the mobile communications company has been running an ad campaign called “It Can Wait” and is gearing up for a new one called “No Text On Board — Pledge Day” that will launch on September 19.

The Pew Internet & American Life Project have released a report that states texting while driving has increased 50% in a single year, and 20% of drivers have admitted to using their phone to email or text when driving.  That number increases even more with younger users, especially teens, with 43% saying they text while driving.  According to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, people that text while driving are 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident than drivers who aren’t texting.

The ad campaigns ran by AT&T haven’t pulled any punches.  AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson stated that “I don’t think you’re going to move the needle without making people uncomfortable.”  Recent ads include people with severe injuries due to accidents caused by texting, holding up signs containing the text they were typing when the accident happened.

AT&T isn’t the only mobile company tackling this issue, as its main competitors Sprint and Verizon have their own no texting while driving campaigns.  Stephenson welcomed his competitors’ efforts, saying “If it’s just AT&T owning this issue, it doesn’t get the traction it needs.”

Import Facebook Friend Birthdays To Google Calendar

It’s just great to make friends feel special, and wishing them well on their birthdays is one simple way to do that. For a tech-fueled generation, Facebook does a great job reminding everyone of their friends birthdays. However, at times we happen to overlook those reminders. On the other hand, emails are a core part of our daily activity, and Google Calendar has a great option to notify via email. So if we can get notified about birthdays via email, there is a high chance we we won’t forget about them again.

Let’s see how we can do that.

WS App Review: Sticky Notes – Save a Note as Your Wallpaper

Wouldn’t it be nice to turn on your iPhone and on the lock screen see a sticky note with important information like the shopping list? Sticky Notes allows you to do just that in a very simple-to-use application.

Once you load the application you can select the color of your sticky note, font color and size, and then start typing away. Once you’ve typed out the note, tap “done”, then tap “save as image” – you will be prompted with instructions on how to set the photo as your lock screen image.

From The Archives

Chuck from TN asks:

When I’m in a folder in Windows XP, I see a button called Back and one called Up. What’s the difference?

One of these (the Up button) was a feature Windows discontinued in Vista and Windows 7, but if you’re navigating through folders and sub folders in XP and decide you overshot your mark, there are a few ways to go. The Back button will take you to the last folder you were in, while the Up button (a folder icon with a green “up” arrow) will take you one level up in the folder hierarchy. This may, or may not, be the same place. One other method, that works in all versions of Windows, is navigation in the Directory.

Ancient Olympic Games

An Olympic summer is always interesting – although this year you couldn’t look anywhere online without having the results spoiled before you saw the competitions aired on TV. Despite that, I really enjoyed the Olympics, but rather than focus on what happened, I though I’d find a site that takes a look at the ancient origins of the games instead.

Navigation is divided up among the following tabs:

History – this is the default tab, where you will learn about the ancient origins of the Olympic games.

Mythology – this tab takes a look at the mythological aspect of the creation of the Olympic games. It features Zeus, Hera, Athena and Apollo.

The Athlete – here you’ll learn about the famous participants of the games from ancient times as well as discover what the criteria was for participating in the Olympics.

The Sports Events – this section covers the traditional sports covered in the ancient Olympics. They are the Pentathlon, Running/Jumping/Discus Throw, Wrestling, Boxing, Pankration, and Equestrian Events. Check this tab out to learn more about each event.

When you arrive at the site a featured video will play automatically that explains the history of the games in a cartoon. The video is roughly seven minutes long and well worth the watch. You’ll also find a listing of all the medal winners dating back to 1896 – click it and it will take you to a search form that lets you search by Athlete Name, Olympic Game, Sports, Gender, Classification, Country, Medal Count/Color, and World or Olympic Record. Another featured section is Museum Treasures where you can check out antique Olympic art pieces and artifacts.

This site provides an excellent look into the history of the Olympic Games. Check it out today!

Dead Horse Point Lightning Strike

We had just been out scouting around for new location in nearby Arches National Park and had decided to come back to camp for a break when these thunderstorms really began to pop (late afternoon). By the time we arrived at the Dead Horse Point, I couldn’t get to the overlook fast enough. We scrambled down the sandstone to a spot that I had scouted out the day before and... (more)
