Quick Tip

What is Rundll32.exe?

Throughout the course of Windows history, one process has always stood out to me the most. It runs silently in your task manager, calmly taking up memory with little explanation as to what it does. Of course, I’m speaking ofrundll32.exe. In fact, you may have seen it crop up a time or two when a program crashes, but other than that, it’s just something that is “there”.

So what is it, exactly?

Well, Rundll32 is actually a medium for which other DLL files go through. Think of it like a baseball pitching machine, and the DLL files are the baseballs. Since there is no way to directly launch a DLL file by itself, Windows needs an application to do this. That’s where rundll32.exe comes in. It launches functionality stored within 32 bit DLL files, thus the name, “run dll 32”.

Be warned, however, as malicious programs like spyware can run under the same name! Keep your virus scanning software up to date, and run weekly spyware checks! That way, you’ll ensure that the process you’ve just learned about is the one with good intentions!

Computers 101

Terry from FL writes:

I have used Hotmail a long time, and in all the years they have never added more fonts. Is there a way to get more fonts?

In the web-based version of Hotmail? No.

However, the best way to achieve this is not to use Hotmail in a web browser, but instead to download a program that will access your emails for you.  This will eliminate the need to log in, open a browser and wait for it to load – plus it will give you all of the font choices that you might expect in Microsoft Word as well as a whole host of other advantages.

The program that might be the easiest to set up with Hotmail is Windows Live. Simply click this link and then click “Download Now”.

Windows Live - Installing

Once you’ve downloaded and installed the program, simply go to your mail inbox, click Accounts and then click Email.  Type in your Hotmail account details and presto, you have now increased the power of your emailing abilities tenfold!

You may notice that the layout is similar to other Microsoft Office programs. Simply click “email message” at the top left, and then select your font in the drop down menu (this will become available to select once you have clicked the main body of the email.)

You’ll also find it much easier to add photos to a message – simply drag and drop the pictures that you want into the blank area of the message. You can resize the picture by pulling on the little white boxes that surround it.

You’ll also get prompted when you receive a new message, as opposed to having to check the Hotmail web page.

You can also mark all unread emails as read, just by right clicking “unread emails” on the left and clicking “mark all as read”. I find this extremely useful, as I tend not to check my Hotmail account as much as I should!

We hope this article has helped you out.

From The Archives Writer: A Few Special Symbols Without the Insert Menu

We all know that when you’re trying to insert symbols (other than the standard ones available on the keyboard) into a document you end up in the Insert menu, Special Character choice.

This leads you to the Special Characters dialog box, where you can peruse a multitude of symbols to insert… and while nobody needs to use them all, there are some that are more useful than others such as a copyright or trademark symbol.

The good news is that for these special characters you’ll find no need to use the Insert menu since the key combination that will cue the AutoCorrect feature to kick in are super easy to remember.

Find out here!

This works for just about anybody, but more so for senior citizens. With age showing on their face and hands, just a smile at the camera or even a stare right into the camera’s lens works like magic.

White House Official Photostream

No matter what your personal politics may be, the fascination with the day to day life, travelings, happenings and events of the President of the United States is almost universal. Maybe it’s the fact that many consider it the most important office in the world, or maybe it’s that it resembles no other job on the planet.

Whatever the case, the White House is always buzzing with interesting activites.

So, wouldn’t you love to be able to look through the lens of White House photographer Pete Souza and members of his talented team?

Guess what? You can!

The White House has an official photostream on the popular photo sharing website Flickr, which lets you see thousands of photos taken with the President, First Family, Vice President and others around the White House and at events. Some of the photographs are the type you would see on the front page of newspaper, but others show a behind the scenes view of the White House and its people.

All of the photos are provided free of charge and can be used for personal use or news organizations. The official terms of use for the photos are: This official White House photograph is being made available only for publication by news organizations and/or for personal use printing by the subject(s) of the photograph. The photograph may not be manipulated in any way and may not be used in commercial or political materials, advertisements, emails, products, promotions that in any way suggests approval or endorsement of the President, the First Family, or the White House.
