Quick Tip

iPad – Dot What?

It’s impressive the stuff you can do just by tapping and holding something on your iDevice. Take for example the other day when I was browsing around in Safari and accidentally held the “.com” key on the keyboard.

I got options for .net, .edu, .org, and even .us!

Just tap and hold the “.com” key and you’re good to go!

Give it a try next time you’re browsing – I’m sure it’ll save you some time! Works on other iDevices, too!

And It Even Has Built-In Speakers to Listen ANYWHERE!

Don't Let Your Records TRAP a Fortune!

Records used to be great... yeah, USED TO BE! Sure, when they were the new hot thing they were a blast. Listening to music has always been, and will always be, a universal enjoyment.

But now your stuck with all these records that you might not even be able to PLAY, much less take on the go! That's SOOOO 1960s of you!

I mean, have you tried finding a turntable recently? Even if you DO, they're ridiculously expensive! And honestly, MP3s or even CDs are just way easier to deal with now. Heck, an MP3 player can hold thousands of songs and weighs a fraction of a vinyl record.

The point is... you invested a LOT of time and money into records and now it's like they've trapped your investment. Even if you want to keep your records, and I know a lot of people do, you should still be able to enjoy that music on modern devices without buying it again!

I repeat: Do NOT buy all that music again!

There is a better way to enjoy your collection!

We've got an AMAZING device from Sharper Image that will give you the power to turn your records into MP3s. That means you can do anything you want with them, from listening on your computer to burning them to CDs to putting them directly on your phone or music player.

See for yourself in this video we made just for you!

Even if you only own a couple records, this thing will completely pay for itself in just a few albums! WOW!!!!

Connecting through the familiar and easy-to-use USB 2.0 Interface, this turntable is a snap to use:

Set the record on the player.

Plug the USB cable into your computer. (Good so far?)

Hit the "Record" button on the included software.

Gently place the needle on the record.

 Oh, wait, that's it!

You're now recording your record collection for a FRACTION of the price of just a couple modern CDs!

PLUS - Some of that great old music isn't even available anymore - in ANY FORM!! Your record may be the ONLY way to access it - and now you can enjoy it ANYWHERE!

Don't BLOW hundreds or thousands rebuying your music, this turntable is one of the biggest and best no-brainers this century!

It's also a completely functional record-playing turntable!

With the built-in speaker, that means you don't even need to convert your records to listen! Maybe you prefer the classic sound that can only come from a needle spinnin' on a record. No problem! Just turn up the volume and enjoy your whole collection ANYWHERE!

Yep, ANYWHERE! Because this cool device can be powered with just a couple batteries. That means it's fully portable. Classic music wherever you want it. (Oh, and yes, you can attach it to external speakers or even earphones!)

Technology like this just blows our mind! It's the perfect meeting of the good ol' days with modern convenience! You'll be turning your gold mine of classic tunes into a modern music library in no time!

Amazing Technology at a CRAZY LOW PRICE!

You'll instantly realize how much money you're saving by the time you're putting in even just your second record! No more buying music you already own just because you want it on your new computer or music player.

You'll save a FORTUNE and get to listen to great music while you do it, because this Sharper Image turntable is only $34.97 with FREE SHIPPING IN THE US! YES!

PS - We only have a few of these available, and they're going QUICK! Don't miss on your money-saving technology of the CENTURY! Besides, this AMAZING deal is going back to $49.97 on Tuesday

Computers 101

Al from Smith writes:

I have messed around with my MP3′s and labeled them, but when I play them on Windows Media Player or some other player, instead of showing e.g. Bob Day – Happy Days.mp3, it shows e.g.Track 10.mp3 .  I thought it was an MP3 tag problem, so I downloaded a tag software and used that.  Back to the media players and it’s still track 10.mp3.  Do you know how to fix this so that I can see my own labels on the songs that I have messed with? Thanks.

Greetings, sir Al of Smith!  Thanks for the excellent question!

This is not only something that plagues more than just you, but also something that I struggled with myself a few years back.  I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and let me tell you… when they’re out of order, the book doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.  So I had one book where tracks 1 – 9 were labeled exactly like that: 1, 2, 3 etc.  The problem is that the way that some MP3 players (including my phone) plays those is 1, 10, 11. 2, etc… reading the integers in order.

So I went through in Windows and renamed them 01, 02, 03…  That should have fixed the problem, (since the integer zero comes before the integer 1), but It didn’t.  When I went to listen to it the next day, same problem.

So, a little dinking around with Windows and I discovered the solution.  Here it is…

Open your music folder and then go to the album with the songs that you’d like to display properly.  Right-click on the file and click on Properties.

Next, click on the file header Details.

The very top option here is Title.  Make sure that it’s correct.  If it’s not, skip the next step and go straight to the fix below.  If it is, scroll down to the File subheader.  The top option here is Name

You’d think that TITLE and NAME would be the same, wouldn’t you?  In this example, they are.  If they’re not, then simply click anywhere in the field containing the incorrect name (track 10 in your example) and change it to whatever you want it to be.  Click Apply at the bottom and you’re good to go.

Hope that this helps.

Gas Buddy works by using your current location (or an address you type in manually if your phone doesn’t have a GPS signal) to find user submitted prices for gas. These prices can be updated by any of the users of the app and the last time each price was updated is shown on the search results.

Paste with the Enter Key in Excel

If you’re anything like me, you believe that there’s only one option when using the keyboard to paste in MS Excel –Ctrl+V.

While that obviously will paste your copied or cut information as it always has, you do have another option if you’re only looking to paste in one location.

Now you’re wondering why you’d want another option… I mean, what could be easier than Ctrl+V when pasting?

How about just using the Enter key?

It's easy! Check it out here!

I’ve Always Wanted To Know:

Are Incandescent Light Bulbs Illegal Now? What’s the truth?

You may of heard someone tell you that owning an incandescent light bulb after a certain date was illegal and that a SWAT team was going to invade your house and shoot your dog ChowChow if you still had one. Well… IT’S ALL TRUE!!!!!!… ok… maybe not all true but like all crazy rumors there is a tiny bit of truth to this one.

The US congress passed a law in 2007 which began the phase out of production or importation of incandescence light bulbs starting in 2012 with the 100 watt bulb and going down to the 40 watt bulb in 2014. At the very end of 2011 congress passed an extension to delay implementation from January 2012 to October 2012.

Google Search Education

Besides being a staff writer here at WorldStart, I also work part time as an academic coach at my university. One thing I’m commonly running into with the students I’m helping in the Academic Support Center is that they don’t know how to do the right kind of search to find information that will help them the right information.

Google wants to change that by offering educators free lesson plans for educators to instruct students on how to search more efficiently, think of the right search terms, (and perhaps most importantly) how to evaluate a resource for credibility. To view these lesson plans, click Lesson Plans and Activities. The lesson plans are divided up by topic and within the topic by difficulty (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). You can also check out more information on how to use these lesson plans by clicking Lesson Overview. From there, you can check out the Lesson Plan Map for how best to implement the information by checking out the skills and other essentials that students will need before hand and develop through the lessons.

Once you’ve used the lesson plan to teach the students the skills they need, you can switch over to making them practice their new skills with the Google a Day Challenge. You can watch this video to see how the Google a Day challenges work. They provide a question and then the student use their research skills to find the correct answer. This encourages critical thinking and develops their web research skills. They offer challenges on Culture, Geography, History, and Science. I can easily see this adapting for other branches of learning as well.

Live Training is a webinar series that helps you improve your own search skills, as well as how you can improve search literacy at your school. It will teach the basics of how Google works, the way you can apply filters to your searches to quickly find the information you need, using Google Map and Google Scholar to get the best results, and so much more. Each topic listed on the page is a video, and if you click you will be able to watch that webinar topic.

What I really love about this is you don’t have to be an educator to use this information. People all over the world use Google Search everyday. It has the potential to help everyone who uses the internet search more efficiently. I particularly love the example that starts the first webinar, Even Better Search where the presenter walks you through how to find a book that you read, but can’t remember the title of using Google Image Search.

Ever had your computer crash? 1

Ever experienced your computer freezing up on you?

I'm sure you know what a nightmare it can be. You're working on an important document...when all of a sudden your computer just F-R-E-E-Z-E-S stone cold! You beg and plead for it to un-freeze...with no luck at all. All of your unsaved hard work is gone in the blink of an eye. Ugh...

That's why I was so excited when I found the solution to your PC hardware crashes!

CheckIt Diagnostics will help you fix your computer and help prevent you from having to replace it prematurely!

We all know that we need to protect our computer from viruses, malware, and spyware...but we sometimes fail to realize that we need to make sure that our hardware is working properly (ie. hard drives, RAM, video cards, modems, etc.). That's where CheckIt Diagnostics comes in!

This will perform diagnostics, like a mechanic, to see if you have underlying hardware issues on computers running Windows XP, Vista - heck even Windows 7!!

Helping you spot trouble - BEFORE it starts!

It's so easy to get started too! Just pop in the disc.

It even lets you upgrade to the most current version of CheckIt Diagnostics...and it will notify you of the latest updates after you've already installed it. Pretty awesome, huh?

In just a few minutes you'll have the program up and running and then you can see all the tests that this baby can perform! It even explains what each test is for.

Now, let's get testing...

Since we specialize in computers here at WorldStart, it was kind of hard to find a computer that had hardware errors...but we managed to hunt a couple down in Steve's computer grave yard.

It only took just a couple of clicks to uncover all the hardware issues that these laptops had!

One of the problems that cropped up right away on the first crappy old laptop was that the internet connection wasn't working - and you know what a hassle that can be! So, we figured, hey, let's use that little problem as a demonstration of helpful this program is going to be to you!

(PLEASE keep in mind that the examples below are just a FEW of the hundreds of problems this can uncover)

OK, back to our laptop - We tried the Internet Connection and Server Access Test -

Ok, now we know there's a problem. To learn how to troubleshoot and fix the issue, we simply clicked on the "Troubleshoot" button and it walks you through the exact steps you need to take in order to fix your connection.

Then we went on to check the next laptop and came up with more problems. When running the Memory test a big fat WARNING error came up!

So, we went ahead and clicked the "Troubleshoot" button. Now, if that doesn't make any sense to you - don't panic. If you don't understand the issue, simply click on the "More Info" button and you can print or email your diagnostics to your computer tech to explain and fix for you.

Then we went on to run the Audio/Video Playback test and man, is this laptop in trouble...

But, once again...we just clicked the "Troubleshoot" button and it told us how to fix it. Just a reminder - if you don't understand what's wrong, you can always print out or email the diagnostics by clicking the "More Info" button.

The problems that we were able to fix above are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what CheckIt Diagnostics can diagnose on your computer.

This baby digs deep to scan and diagnose practically any hardware on your PC that you can imagine: 1

1 System (Software, Processors, Memories, Ports, PCI Devices)
1 Storage (Disc Drives & Optical Drives)
1 Communications & Network (Network Adapters, Internet Access & Modems)
1 Attached Devices (Devices such as Printers)
1 Audio / Visual (Graphic Adapters, Monitors, Desktop Graphics & Audio Input, Output & Playback)

To start diagnosing your computer you just select the test or tests that you want to run and click "Run Selected Tests" and in a matter of minutes your results will be generated!

You get your test results INSTANTLY after each test is run!

If an issue is detected, a Troubleshoot button pops up. Just click it and it will instruct you exactly the steps to take. How's that for an easy fix?

Oh, and get this - if your computer does have an issue and you aren't comfortable or don't know exactly how to fix it, CheckIt Diagnostics can generate a report for you to email or print out and take to a computer repair technician (or that "techy" neighbor down the street)!! All you do is click the "More Info" button and from there you can email or print your report.

How many times have you taken your computer to get fixed and you haven't the slightest idea what's wrong with it?

Save $100's by diagnosing what's wrong with your computer! 1

What if you could eliminate the diagnostic step for your computer technician and do it yourself?

Just imagine how much money you could save!

It's like going to the doctor's office when you're sick. You have to pay for all the testing - blood draws, cultures, etc. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could eliminate all the testing costs, tell your doctor your diagnoses, and just have your doctor write your prescription?

CheckIt Diagnostics eliminates the diagnostic and testing costs that a computer technician would perform, by letting you diagnose and test your computer!

Make sure that you're prepared with CheckIt Diagnostics, the next time your computer starts freezing up or randomly crashing.

Heck, maybe your computer has been freezing on you for awhile now...

Quit living life like that and FINALLY get to the root of the problem - once and for all!

This exact version of CheckIt Diagnostics sells for $50! See for yourself below...

We've got CheckIt Diagnostics for just $16.97 and US shipping is FREE!!

That's an incredible 62% savings!!

This will pay for itself - the very first time that it finds an issue with your computer!

Fall Cascades In The Smokies

Sometimes the good shots aren’t where you think they are. It was autumn in the Smoky Mountains. If you’ve never been there in the fall, you can be forgiven for thinking it’s a quiet, peaceful time of year when the tourists have flown home and you have the place to yourself. Nope, it’s a zoo. I think fall is actually ...(More)
