WorldStart Tech Tips 2012-11-16 Having trouble viewing parts or all of the newsletter? View the entire newsletter here! In The News 11-16-2012 That’s Fast. Google Fiber is finally here. What is Google Fiber, you ask? Earlier this week Google launched a fiber network offering internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps in Kansas City, Kansas. On top of that, they’re offering the new high speed for only $70 a month. Both the speed and price tag beat out most traditional Internet Service Providers. While the new internet speeds will not consistently run at 1 Gbps, many early users of Google Fiber are claiming constant speeds of around 600 to 700 Mbps over Ethernet and around 200 Mbps over a Wi-Fi connection. Google Fiber is also providing more than just its super-speed internet connection. Don’t want to pay $70 a month? Kansas City residents have the option of getting a 5 Mbps internet connection for free (that’s $0). Of course, they have to pay around $300 for an installation fee, but that guarantees the ability to get the free internet for seven years. Google Fiber also has the option of adding a cable subscription for $50 more. The catch? The TV package is missing ESPN (I quit), TNT, and HBO. It seems that people are liking Google Fiber in Kansas City so far. The question is, when will it come to your city? OMG RLY? Here’s an interesting bit of news for you. For the first time ever, the amount of texting in the United States has gone down. Over the last quarter the average number of monthly texts sent has decreased to 675 per customer. The quarter before that showed an average amount of 700 per customer. The reason for declining text messages can mostly likely be attributed to the rise in internet-connected devices. Instead of just texting, phones allow us to communicate and send messages in many different ways beyond the simple text message. In fact, nearly half of all phones in use in the US now are smartphones. This means that instead of using potentially expensive texting plans, people are sending messages over apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Google Voice, and more. Apple’s iMessage and Research In Motion’s Blackberry Messenger are also directly built into their devices and can send messages over data plans instead of a texting plan. There’s also this: the cost of a single text message is usually 20 cents. At 160 bytes per message, the total cost of sending 1 MB worth of data would end up being $1,250! And you thought your data plan was overpriced… -Mike Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Rosa from TX asks: What are “Pen Flicks”? My tech-savvy friend suggested enabling them on my touchscreen computer. I think the reason people love touch screens is because of how natural the hand gestures feel. For example, to scroll down a document, it feels better to just swipe down instead of pressing a little arrow key. If you’re looking to bring some of these intuitive gestures to your Windows computer, then might I humbly recommend that you enable Pen flicks. To utilize pen flicks, your computer must be touch screen, or your laptop’s trackpad must support gestures. If you have a graphics tablet, then that will also allow pen flicks as well. Begin by pressing the Start button, and selecting Control Panel. Select the Classic view, and double click Pen and Input Devices. Now choose the Flicks tab, and check the box labeled Use flicks to perform common actions quickly and easily. Now you have two options: the navigation flicks, or the navigational flicks with editing. I personally prefer the latter, as it allows me to copy and paste with ease. Choose the option that best suits you, and of course, you can always change this setting. If you select Customize, you can hand select what action a flick in a certain direction will perform. If you’d like to add a custom keyboard shortcut, just select the add option. For example. I made it so that a downward flick will close the program using the keyboard shortcut Alt+F4. Finally, one last setting I’d like to bring to your attention is the flick sensitivity. If you find that you have to repeat a gesture several times before Windows recognizes it, then you should make the sensitivity more relaxed. However, if you find gestures are occurring by accident, than you should move the slider to the precise setting. I hope this setting makes your computer feel a little bit more natural. The Ultimate Guide to Writing Better Than You Normally Do Whether I can believe it or not, I often get asked for advice on how people can improve their writing. This past semester, three of the students I was doing academic coaching for asked, and sometimes I get random e-mails about it. After giving it some thought, I searched the net for a collection of tips that encompassed the advice I normally give and offered more. I found The Ultimate Guide to Writing Better Than You Normally Do posted on McSweeneys. The great thing about writing is that you can always get better at it. Even published, best-selling authors can improve their writing (you might notice this if you read a series – I sure do!) and I’ve seen a dramatic improvement in my own writing just over the last four years of actively writing for school and work. Here you’ll find ten tips that will help you write better than you normally do. I agree with all of them, but I’d add the caveat that it is important to recognize that there are different kinds of writing as well: commercial, academic, creative, etc. So you have to know your audience in order to be successful at what you are doing. The one I have the most trouble following is Don’t Procrastinate. I confess, I do all my writing for school at the last minute, I believe I write better under the pressure of getting it done. I even experimented this semester with getting an early start, and got nowhere. So I’m still battling with that one. It applies to my creative writing too, especially since there are no deadlines, I tend to start a story and then get distracted and not come back to it, but I’m working hard this summer to revisit those things and get some of them finished. If you’re a writer, what is it that you struggle with? Did a tip on the list help you? I hope you’ll find them as useful as I did! http://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/the-ultimate-guide-to-writing-better-than-you-normally-do ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com Do You Wish You Could... ...Be On Time, EVERY Time? ...Remember ANY Important Date? ...Keep ALL Your Phone Numbers Handy? ...Have Reminders Sent STRAIGHT to Your Phone?
