WorldStart Tech Tips 2012-12-06 Having trouble viewing parts or all of the newsletter? View the entire newsletter here! Florence from MA asks: What are drivers? Good question – a classic, in fact! Drivers are basically instructions that tell your computer how to use its hardware. Each hardware device in your computer has a driver. Some, like drivers for a keyboard or mouse, are built into the computer itself. Others, like video card drivers or network drivers, need to be installed when you get a the new hardware device. Without the proper driver, your stuff won’t work, that is, unless you have a newer operating system like Windows Vista or 7 that can search for certain kinds of drivers. If you’re having trouble with a particular hardware device, chances are that an updated driver may solve your problem. These can be found at the website for the company that made your equipment. Two good sources to help you locate updated drivers are Windrivers and DriverGuide . ~ Steve Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Kamal from Kokata writes: For my non-professional home computer, which processor will be convenient: Double Core or Single Core ? Hi, Kamal. Thanks for the great question. I think that the question these days isn’t really “single core or dual core”, but “dual core or quad core.” I recently upgraded my cell phone from a single core Samsung Captivate to a dual-core Sony Xperia Ion, and let me tell you… the speed difference on Angry Birds is amazing. So this question… like so many where computers are concerned… is “What will you be using your computer for?” If you basically use your e-mail for banking, chat, homework, maybe the occasional YouTube video, then a single-core processor is fine. And you can get them at bargain-basement prices (if you can find them) because retailers are trying to get rid of them. If you’re a casual gamer, like to stream HD Netflix movies, then you’ll probably want to go with a dual-core processor. If you’re a hardcore gamer or you edit HD movies and don’t want to wait a week for them to render, or you run architectural software or something like that, you might think about breaking down and getting a quad-core processor. Here’s a way to think of the difference in speeds. Have you ever been at the bank or the theater with a long line and only one cashier or teller open? Things drag merrily along at a snail’s pace as you creep toward your destination. Then suddenly, miraculously, they open a second window. How much does that speed the line up? Then, they open a third and fourth window, which allows them to break the existing line in two, and process two people at a time from each of the lines. NOW how fast does the line move? AMD tried introducing a tri-core processor for a while, but benchmark testing proved it to be not appreciably faster than the dual-core. The reason? It was still feeding from one line of data. With an odd number of cores, you lose the ability to sub-divide the line of data. I hope that this helps. Tune Up If you take a look through your iTunes music collection, you are bound to see more than a few songs that are misspelled, missing artist or album information, missing cover art, or my personal least favorite: a bunch of songs named Track 01, Track 02 and so on. These often come from downloading music off the Internet that doesn’t have the complete track information, or from importing mix CDs for which iTunes cannot find the track info. Correcting all of these imperfections manually would be a near impossible task, but today I am going to show an application that makes it oh-so easy! It is called TuneUp, and it makes adding missing music information a jiffy. Let’s check it out, shall we? Visit WorldStart today for an in-depth look! (Want these tips in their entirety? Jigidi I love puzzles! My enjoyment of puzzles has been passed down from my mother, and she got it from my grandfather. So when I found this awesome puzzle site, I knew I had to share it with you! Navigation is really easy if you want to solve a puzzle. Just choose one from the main page or browse by navigating through the pages of puzzles. You can filter them by selecting categories and sizes from the drop down boxes above the puzzles. Categories include Outdoors, People, Objects, Animals, Plants, Machines, Buildings, Seasonal, Art, Mosaics, Themes, For Kids, and Miscellaneous. Sizes include Small (0-60 pieces), Medium (60-120), Large (120-240), and Very Large puzzles (240+). If you want to make a puzzle, click Create on the left side menu. This will take you to the profile creation form. You need a profile to create puzzles, but don’t worry, it’s free and doesn’t require any personal information. Just fill out the form and click the Create Profile button. Then you’ll be asked to fill in some optional information. If you want to be able to retrieve your password, you must provide them with a working e-mail address. Now that you’re ready to make a puzzle, click Create again! This whisks you to the puzzle creator. Start by clicking the green Select Image button. Choose the image off your computer that you want to turn into a puzzle. It will load the image and then you’ll need to use the slider, located in the top left of the page, to set how many pieces you want your puzzle to have. Sliding up increases the puzzle count, and sliding down decreases the puzzle count. The number of puzzle pieces available to you depends on the size of the image you’ve uploaded. When you’re happy with the amount of puzzle pieces, you can click test to see how they look at that size. It will be super difficult to match them because they’re too small or you’ve made it too easy by making them too large. When you’re done testing the puzzle, click okay. Then, you’ll need to name the puzzle and decide whether you want to share it publicly. If you decide to share it, you need to make sure that you’re respecting the copyright of the image’s creator, that it does not contain obscene or illegal images, and that it is respectful. If your image meets those guidelines, click the Okay button. If you think some people might find the image offensive, you can check the disclaimer box stating that the puzzle may offend some people. If you want some help deciding what is acceptable to post, check out the Guidelines section or the FAQ. Both contain useful information that can help you make the best decision regarding posting your puzzle. You can post up to four puzzles in a 24-hour period. Go enjoy puzzle solving! I know I’m going to! ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com
