Computers 101

Meghan asks:

My Windows XP start menu is quite large. When I go to it, it’s displayed in one long column. Can I change that in any way?

Hi Meghan! I have an incredibly large start menu myself. Depending on how many applications you have, you may benefit from more columns.

Here’s how to do it:

First, pick any empty area in your taskbar and right-click, then left-click on Properties.

When you click on Properties, your Taskbar and Start Menu Properties box pops up and there are two tabs. Click onStart Menu (which is about half way down). Click on the little button next to Start menu, and then click on Customize.

Another two-tabbed box will pop up. Click on Advanced.

In the middle of the box you will see a list of Start menu items. Go down the list until you find Scroll Programs (it’s near the bottom). If you want one column, put a check mark in the box. Since we want multiple columns, we make sure the box is unchecked.

The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties box pops up one last time. Click on Apply, and then click on OK.

So now instead of one looooong column…

… we have three shorter ones!

That should cut down on some of your start menu search time, don’t ya think?

Thanks for writing, Meghan!

On The Move

Forcing an Android Download to Stop

I recently had a Gmail image download lock up on my Android, with the download continuing for nearly an hour, even after the image was safely stored in the download folder. When turning off mobile data and Wi-Fi, doing several restarts, and removing the battery proved ineffectual (although after each restart, it was a couple minutes before the download resumed), I searched the web for an answer. Efforts to find an online solution proved equally fruitless, as they generally applied specifically to app downloads. In addition to the inconvenience, I assumed that–as long as the download persisted–it would also continue to drain the battery.

So, the following steps (in Android 4.0) were taken and the download finally stopped.

Below, you can see the download running.

From The Archives

Maggie from CA writes:

I would like to update my USB ports to 3.0. After researching online for a 4 port USB 3.0 card, I find that prices vary from $20 – $100, depending on the brand. Is one brand of card better than another?

USB 3.0 is the newest standard of USB specification, which allows devices made to work with USB 3.0 operate far faster then the same device would over a USB 2.0 connection. USB 3.0 add-on cards are available for desktop PCs, but how do you decide which one to buy?

There's stuff to consider, though...

I’ve Always Wanted To Know:

How do game companies make money giving away free games?

From Facebook games where you’re a virtual farmer to online card games and role-playing games, one trend has taken over within the last few years: companies giving the games away for free. But how does a video game company afford the artists, designers and coders to make these games if they’re just giving them away? Is it really a scam, or is there some secret logic to it?

Let’s start by looking at the gaming business.
The classic model for video game sales is for a game development company to have publishers who advance large dump trucks full of cash (okay, usually it’s a check) in order  for the development company to afford the months or years of development time – and in return the publisher receive a very large share of the profits. This system has worked since video games were introduced, so why change it?

You'll be surprised - Check it out here!

Lecture Fox

Welcome to Lecture Fox  - a site devoted to bringing you free lectures on many different subjects!

When I first started contemplating going back to school and getting a degree, I entertained the idea of going into Computer Science. I love computers, and had already dabbled in web design and very basic programming, but I was worried it would be too math intensive, so I went into the Humanities instead. But even that didn’t kill my desire to learn more about programming, so when I found Lecture Fox (and there was an open course from Harvard on Computer Science) I knew that I was going to have to work my way gleefully through it.

Then I saw all the other courses that were available, like Learning Chinese: A Foundation Course in Mandarin, Introduction to Geology, and the History of Information, just to list a few. You’ll find courses in Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Language, Programming, Application Building, History, Literature, and Art. All of them are free, and you can work through them at your own pace.

Navigation is easy – just scroll down the page and select the course you want to check out. Want more courses? Click the Next or More links at the bottom of the page. Want just Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, or Mathematics? Click the links on the right side of the page to filter the course list.

This is an awesome site, and you should bookmark it so you can come back and take different courses whenever you want to!
