In The News - 5-10-2013

XP users refuse to let go.

With the official retirement date Windows XP on April 8, 2014 inching closer and closer, the number of people using XP isn’t dropping. According to Net Application the number of XP users dropped by only half a percentage point in April. XP accounts for 41.7% of all Windows systems worldwide, barely down from 42.2% in March.

The adoption rate for the highly controversial Window 8 inched up only by half a percent in March to 4.2% of all Windows users.

Adobe Says Goodbye Software, Hello Cloud.

Adobe announced big changes to its Creative Suite software line that includes Photoshop and Illustrator. The company will no longer sell individual licenses to program. It will instead offer only subscription services to the its Creative Cloud.

The company recently said it will stop selling physical discs of its Creative Suite programs. The creative cloud costs $50 a month for individuals and $70 a month for teams.

Senate Passes Internet Sales Tax Bill

The Senate voted 69 to 27 to pass a bill that allows states to collect taxes from purchases made over the Internet, from catalogs and via radio and television ads. The bill would require businesses with over $ 1 million in sales to collect sales tax from customers and then remit that money to the state in which the customer lives.

Smaller businesses complain that the administration costs of collecting taxes at different rates for each state would be crippling.

The bill is expected to face a fight in the House.

How do I take a screen shot like the ones in your newsletter?

I get email everyday asking that very question. So, here ya go!

You just tap the PrtScn (print screen) button. The real function of this key is to make a “snapshot” of your screen. If you have some imaging software like Adobe Photoshop (or a good word processor), you can then paste it into there and crop, etc. In fact, this is how we do our snappy screen shots.

Steep It

Fancy a cuppa tea? My roommate got me hooked on a white tea from Teavana and I drink it all the time now. It has sparked a curiosity in me to try other teas as well. The one thing I’ve noticed, especially about loose leaf tea, is that they all have different amounts of time they require to steep. What do you do if you’ve lost the packaging, can’t find it, and want to brew the perfect cup of tea?

Well, I’d recommend bookmarking this handy site. It has a chart of the time you should steep your tea by tea type and a handy built in timer!

When you get to the site you’ll notice the tea timer text field on the left and the chart on the right. Beneath the text field (which by default reads 3 minutes) you’ll find examples of the different ways you can input text into the timer. Or if you’re using those specific examples (3 minutes, 2minutes30seconds, 34, black, green, or herbal) you can just click them and they already have a timer linked to them that will begin with your click.

We store our loose leaf tea in airtight tins so we often can’t put our hands on the instructions for that tea. This site has eliminated our need to hunt for them and made enjoying a cup of tea easier.

Before The Dawn At Zabriskie Point

“I almost hate taking this shot,” I remember telling my 10 year old son as I set up my tripod. See, Zabriskie Point is a bit of an icon spot and I really like to try to attempt to get shots that, you know, the rest of the world hasn’t shot the heck out of just yet. Although we’d hiked a bit off to the right of the main viewing area, I still...(More)

Red Clouds Over Bryce

Sometimes you just get lucky! We were at Sunset Point at Bryce Canyon for sunrise (I know, it’s backwards, but I didn’t name it). Since it was summer there was a bit of a crowd and all eyes were looking towards – and forward to – sunrise. Well, I have this little habit of... (More)

Dune Sunrise
