Ubuntu Drops Tablet & Phone Plans

Ubuntu is giving up on the idea of a unified system that would work across desktops, smartphones, and tablets.  The company dropped their involvement in Unity8, an OS designed to work across platforms. The company instead decided to focus on cloud computing and providing technology for smarthomes.

The company will return to the GNOME desktop with the release of Ubuntu 18.04 next year.

Chrome Is Browser King

Chrome continues to reign as the most popular desktop browser. In March, Google’s browser was used by nearly 59% of all PCs accessing the web. Internet Explorer was in second place with just under 20%. Firefox holds the number 3 spot with nearly 12% of users. Edge is still struggling to find wide adoption, accounting for less than 6% of the users, which Safari accounts for just over 3%.

Announcements

At one time or another we've all wanted to quickly create a greeting card or flier. But most programs are so complicated, there's nothing quick or easy about the process. It's complicated and overwhelming. Or maybe you want a nice brochure, calendar, or a poster for an event. But the product turned out by your word processor some online program is underwhelming and unprofessional. What you want is something with high-quality images and an intuitive, user-friendly interface.

And there was a great option out there... Print Shop.  It has always been my favorite go-to software for these kind of projects. So why didn't I offer it to you sooner? It was WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. I couldn't get a deal on it to save my life...believe me, I've tried for years!

So you have to imagine how excited I was when I found a deal Print Shop 21 Essentials - A DIRT CHEAP DEAL!

YEAH! You read that right.

If you've never used a Print Shop program, you'll swoon when you see how simple the interface is!

As soon as you open this program you are greeted with a list of things you can create!

Wanna make a banner? EASY! How about a greeting card for a birthday? BOOM DONE! A sign for your craft show? COVERED! And that is just 3 things off the long, long list! Or just start from scratch and do whatever you want, however you like it.

Each and every one of those templates is completely customizable!

Yeah! We are talking access to over 100,000 super-high-end stock photos and sleek graphics that will be sure to give that presentation or report cover professional pizzaz it needs to stand out from the crowd!

Most Greeting card programs have just a few pre-loaded cards. You might be able to change a name or the greeting, but you can't change the font, color, or even the images! Believe me, I've been stuck in that nightmare with Microsoft Office's measly offerings.

With this program, you make a customized keepsake and not the same card everyone else in the world picked up at Walmart. And have you priced greeting cards lately? Nice ones are outrageous!

And don't think Print Shop is just a pretty face!

Doing a mail merge in Microsoft Office with Excel is probably one of the most annoying and cumbersome thing to ever have to do... It's not fun and trust me I know! With Print Shop 21 Essentials you can just add new people to your list and with one click of a button print off the whole list without blinking an eye or changing to another program!

If you're familiar with Print Shop, I know you've already added it to your cart. If you haven't checked out this amazing program yetI am telling you, it seriously has everything you need!  I am not sure if you caught this... but... THIS IS LESS THAN $1 !!! Yeah that's right! You can grab this software up for just $0.99 !!!!

Stop messing around with over-complicated and over-priced programs and click the link below to grab yours today!

Set Your Browser Homepage

I’ve had quite a few questions about setting browser homepages this week. The good news is that you can set your homepage to be any site you choose. So, if you switched to a new browser and don’t like the default homepage, you can easily change it.

Sometimes, changed homepages are a result of accidentally clicking on something. Often times it can be caused by a browser hijacker that redirect you off to the site of the hijacker’s choice. Here’s how to get the page of your choice back.

For Internet Explorer

click the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the browser and select Internet Options from the drop-down menu.

internet-options-ie

This window will pop up. As you can see, there are a whole lot of options here.

http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/images/ct-images/2016/12/explorer-internet-options-1.jpg

The first tab at the top is General.  Your first option at the top is to set your home page.  You can type in the address of the site you’d like to use as your home page.

http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/images/ct-images/2016/12/explorer-internet-options3.jpg

Then click the OK button.

For Firefox:

You’ll want to click the menu button in the upper-right corner and choose options.

firefoxoptions

Then choose General from the left pane. You can then either type in your preferred homepage or set the current page.

http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/images/ct-images/2017/04/fire-fox-reset-home.jpg

Here’s how to select your preferred homepage.  First, open Chrome.  In the top-right corner, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu.

chrome-menu-button

Click Settings. (If you’re using a Chromebook, click “Show advanced settings” at the bottom of the page.)

chrome-menu-settings

Under “On startup,” click Open a specific page or set of pages.

chrome-start-up

Tick the box next to Open a specific set of pages. Click Set pages.

chrome-set-startup-pages

Enter the web address of the page you want to see when you open Chrome.

set-home-page-chrome

Click OK.

Your other startup options are either a new tab page like the screen you’re getting now or to open to the last page you used.

For Microsoft Edge:

To choose a new homepage, you’ll need to click the menu button. That’s the little icon of three dots to the far right of the
page.

http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/images/ct-images/2017/01/edge-menu-dots.jpg

Then choose Settings.

Then select Open Microsoft Edge with:

Tap the arrow and choose A specific page or pages.

The Latest Home Security Tech

What’s New in Home and Business Security?

Technology has changed the way we do just about everything. Whether we’re shopping, exercising or checking the weather, it seems computers have uncovered a more convenient, more efficient way of doing things. Security systems for homes and businesses are no exception to this. Recently, the Internet of Things has been making a big impact in the home and business security sector, creating opportunities for clever and innovative security solutions through technology. Consider some developments in security technology that could make your security system simpler and your facility safer.

Next Gen Cameras

Cameras have been an obvious component of any facility security setup. Business security cameras prevent shoplifting and other crime. Home security cameras alert residents of intruders. Cameras themselves are nothing new, but technology has created some fascinating possibilities for common security cameras in terms of what they can do and where they can be placed. Take for instance the Ring Video Doorbell. This is essentially a miniature, front-facing cellphone-sized camera mounted in a doorbell. Ring’s HD camera feed is available remotely through a handy smartphone app. Users can even answer the door through the app.

skybell-door-bell

Another cool security camera solution, Alfred, allows users to turn their old cell phones into home security systems. Like other tech-based security products, a mobile app allows users to view a live video feed remotely. As long as you have an old Android phone and a wifi connection, you’ve got a simple home security setup without monthly fees, complicated setups or service technicians.

alfred-app

Aside from unique applications of surveillance technology, cameras have gotten more sophisticated in general. Just as cell phone cameras have made a giant leap of progress in terms of quality, many surveillance cameras offer high definition feed, making it easier to identify that faces of intruders. One security company, Lorex, has event developed a camera with color night vision. Yes, technology can facilitate a lot of cool and unexpected innovations in many industries, including security. At the same time, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

Is It Too Hot For My Flash Drive?

We all know that many electronic items and accessories are sensitive to heat. A reader is worried about a recent order of flash drives.  “My order of flash drives were delivered to my mailbox on a day when the temperature was over 100 degrees.  I am not sure of the time of the delivery, but based on my observations for when the mail has been delivered in the past, the package was exposed to high heat for 9 or 10 hours.I want to know if this has damaged the flash drives.”

flashdrivecrop

Since flash drives go into slots in PCs, they are designed to withstand some fairly high temperatures. These storage devices operate optimally between 32 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit.  I checked the weather for your town and the high on the day your package was delivered was 97 degrees. So even 10 hours in your mailbox shouldn’t be a problem.

If you’re concerned, try doing some test saves on the drives to make sure it’s working properly.

Telemarketer Tips

1. If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for bankruptcy and you could sure use some money. Ask, "How long can I keep it? Do I have to ever pay it back, or is it like the other money I borrowed before my bankruptcy?"

2. If they start out with, "How are you today?" say, "Why do you want to know?" Or you can say, "I'm so glad you asked, because no one seems to care these days and I have all these problems, my sciatica is acting up, my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died . . ." When they try to get back to the sales process, just continue on with telling about your problems.

3. If the person says he's Joe Doe from the XYZ Company, ask him to spell his name, then ask him to spell the company name, then ask where it is located. Continue asking personal questions or questions about the company for as long as necessary.

4. This one works better if you are male: Telemarketer: "Hi, my name is Judy and I'm with Canter and Siegel services....You: "Hang on a second." (few seconds pause) "OK Judy, (in a really husky voice) what are you wearing?"

5. Crying out, in well-simulated tones of pleasure and surprise, "Judy!! Is this really you? I can't believe it! Judy, how have you BEEN?" Hopefully, this will give Judy a few brief moments of terror as she tries to figure out where the heck she could know you from.

6. Say, "No," over and over. Be sure to vary the sound of each no, and keep an even tempo even as they're trying to speak. This is the most fun if you can keep going until they hang up.

7. If MCI calls trying to get you to sign up with their Family and Friends plan, reply, in as sinister a voice as you can muster, "I don't have any friends . . . would you be my friend?"

8. If they clean rugs: "Can you get blood out, you can? Well, how about goat blood or HUMAN blood - chicken blood too?"

9. Let the person go through their spiel, providing minimal but necessary feedback in the form of an occasional "Uh-huh, really, or, "That's fascinating." Finally, when they ask you to buy, ask them to marry you. They get all flustered, but just tell them you couldn't give your credit card number to someone who's a complete stranger.

10. Tell them you work for the same company they work for.

Example: Telemarketer: "This is Bill from Watertronics."

You: "Watertronics!! Hey I work for them too. Where are you calling from?"

Telemarketer: "Uh, Dallas, Texas." You: "Great, they have a group there too? How's business/the weather? Too bad the company has a policy against selling to employees! Oh well, see ya."

11. Tell the Telemarketer you are busy and if they will give you their phone number you will call them back. If they say they are not allowed to give out their number, then ask them for their home number and tell them you will call them at home (this is usually the most effective method of getting rid of Telemarketers). If the person says, "Well, I don't really want to get a call at home," say, "Yeah! Now you know how I feel." (smiling, of course...)

Defective Merchandise

A guy walks into a hardware store and says, "I want a chain saw that will cut 6 trees in an hour."

"Well, if you need to cut that much wood that fast, you need this top-of-the-line model."

"Okay, I'll take it."

The next day he brings it back. "This chainsaw is defective. It would only cut down one tree and it took all day!"

The salesman takes the chain saw and starts it up to see what's wrong.

At that the customer asks, "What's that noise?"

One More Big Deal

Oh! This is just FANTASTIC!! I'm so excited - we've just found an amazing program that lets anyone and everyone create their own website! It's super easy to use and no web programming knowledge is necessary at all! If you can use a word processor, you can use our newest program - WebEasy 6!

We've had version 4 and 5 and they were good, but this version 6 really takes it up to the next level! WOW! We're talking everything you need in order to create an amazing, professional-looking website! You'll be online with your own personal or business site in no time!

First off, I want to stress you don't need ANY background in HTML, JAVA, or web programming - if you can use a word processor you can do this! It includes a whopping 120 pre-made, professional-looking templates! You're bound to find several that are just perfect for your needs, and if you don't they are easy enough to modify! It's amazing how well done this is!

As for the type of sites this can do, well - your imagination is really the limit! You can make a simple personal site to show off your family photos, you can build an information site about your favorite subject, you can create an online business complete with shopping cart, you can put together a "group" site complete with calendars, news, schedules, whatever! Pretty much anything you can think of, this can do - and probably already has a killer template ready to go!

Oh, and using it is sooooo simple - all the tools are really easy to understand, so it's simple to add graphics, photos, text, flash animations, etc. Oh, get this - it includes an amazing 85,000 different photos, clipart, buttons, borders, animations, music, sound effect and more! Talk about having a custom site huh! WOW!!!

What if you don't want to use templates at all? What if you're a more of a "from scratch" kind of designer? Well, once you see how easy it is to create a site from scratch, you may decide to go it alone! The tools are so easy to use - most of it is a matter of drag and drop! So, start from scratch, or use a template - either way the site you create is going to blow people away!

OK, all that's great, but what do you do after it's built? Well, you can host your website though the publisher (a 1 click operation - now that's handy), upload to any number of free sites available online, or go for a high-quality paid hosting service of your choice. Easy!

Once you're up and running, how do you let everyone know you're there? HA! This has you covered there too! This includes tools to help you optimize your site for a high rank in the search engines - and it helps you to submit your site to all the major search engines! It does it all!

Now, most web site software is really expensive - You'll need an expensive subscription to the Creative Cloud to use Dreamweaver! That's $100 a year! Why pay that much when this does pretty much the same thing?

Your cost? Get this - just $0.99!!! This is a fantastic deal on some of the easiest, most powerful web creation software on the market - give it a try - you'll love it too!

PS - Please note that this was a limited quantity deal, so once these are gone, we will NOT BE ABLE TO GET IT AGAIN AT THIS SUPER LOW PRICE!
