Nook owners rejoice! Barnes & Noble has added the Google Play store to the two latest versions of the Nook tablet. The Nook HD and Nook HD + will now have access to the extensive Google Play library of 700,000 apps, including the Google Chrome Web browser.

“By adding Google Play to NOOK HD and NOOK HD+, we are offering our customers even more great entertainment on our award-winning tablets,” said William Lynch, chief executive officer of Barnes & Noble. “Now with access to more than 700,000 apps and the best reading experience available, NOOK HD and NOOK HD+ are must-see products for entertainment lovers looking for high-quality tablets at incredibly low prices.”

This also gives users access to YouTube, Google Maps and Gmail and access to video services like HBO To Go.

The update is available at the Barnes & Noble website and will also be pushed to the devices with a Wi-Fi update.  Even through Nook offers its own line of apps, it is giving users full access to the Google Play store, something the competing Amazon Kindle Fire does not allow. (You can hack your way to the Google Play Store, but say goodbye to your warranty.)

Speaking of Kindle, you can also download the Kindle app for your Nook. So it’s possible to enjoy Amazon e-books on your Nook.

Nook tablets have been generally well received, but struggled to keep up in sales with the Amazon Kindle Fire and its large app store. Barnes and Noble is hoping the addition of the huge selection of the Google Play Store will convince consumers to consider making the Nook their tablet of choice.
