Norton Safe Web

With the plethora of malicious web sites on the internet, wouldn’t it be nice to have a way to check if a link was safe before you visited it? Well now there is! I use this all the time to check if links are safe to share with all of you. I also use it to check and make sure that links that are submitted to me for reviews are safe to browse before I go check them out. Once they pass the all clear on the link checker, I’ll go visit them and see if they are something that I’d review for this column.

It is so easy to use! Just copy and paste the link you want to check (or hand type in the address) into the text box and then click the magnifying glass or press enter on your keyboard. When the results come up there are four levels to their rating system. They are: Warning (red x button), Caution (red exclamation point button), Safe (green check mark button), and Untested (grey question mark button).

Notice that the report is broken up into sections. First there will be an overall rating for the site, next if it is a business will be the e-commerce safety information, then the general report, and finally the threat report listing. And on the right side of the page you’ll find the community rating and reviews for the site you are testing. Beneath the community rating area, there will be a listing of most commonly used tags for that site.

I highly¬†recommend¬†checking out what the community has to say in the review section. For example: if you put in YouTube to check, you’ll find that it has a perfect rating from Norton, but in the comments you learn that if you click links in the video’s description you might be clicking an infected link. I’d suggest checking those links in the Norton Safe Web link checker before visiting them. This is also a great way to check links that have been shortened – you never know what those are hiding!

This site offers you a great way of being extra careful when browsing the web. To me it is worth the thirty seconds or so that it takes to get and read the report if it saves me from the hours of trying to get malware, spyware, or viruses off of my computer. Check it out today!
