Video chatting is the cool new way to communicate in the twenty-first century! One popular video call service is Skype, which we’ve covered before in the newsletter, but I recently stumbled upon another named ooVoo, and it is chock full of useful features, including 6-way video calling! I think many of you will enjoy how you can begin a video call with anyone in the world, in just seconds. Are you excited? I thought you might be!
Point your browser to ooVoo , and select the Download ooVoo button for either Windows or Mac.
The setup file will save, then double click it and follow the very easy Setup Wizard.
When the wizard is finished, you will be prompted to create an account. Just fill in some basic information and press I accept – Create account.
Next, the ooVoo application will open on the right-hand side of your screen like this.
You’ll notice a list of online friends, with a default “ooVoo Buddy”. Later on, I’ll show you how to add your own friends and family to the list. But first, I’d like to show you my favorite feature!
Click the tab with Earth on it, and ooVoo provides you with a Video Call Link. You can just send or email this link to anyone, regardless if they have ooVoo or not, and when they click on it, they will join you for a video chat in seconds!
I tested out my video call link, and when my friend clicked it, my computer started ringing like a telephone. Of course, I chose to Answer the call.
Then opened up ooVoo’s video calling interface, pretty slick, huh? As I mentioned before, ooVoo features 6-way video calling. To add people, select the Add to call button and you can add friends and family through your contacts, a video call link, or even using your Skype buddy list.
I tried out a video call with six of my buddies with webcams, and boy, was the connection good! There was no lagging and picture was crystal clear!
Another aspect of ooVoo I like is the option of Sidebar View. Say you want to maintain a video chat, while browsing the web or viewing a document. You can select the sidebar button, from the lower right corner of the video call window.
Then, your video chat appears in a condensed view, enabling maximum desktop space!
ooVoo also has an “answering machine” feature, called Video Messages, which lets you send and receive video messages. It’s perfect, if you want someone to see your message in a face-to-face way, and they’re not online.
If you want to see if any of your friends are already using ooVoo, select Contacts from the menu bar, followed by Import Contacts. Here you can choose from a variety of services to import friends from, or send a personal invitation from the bottom of the window.
This is just the tip of the iceberg! ooVoo has so many other features, including Video Call Recording, Text Chat, and support for Phone Calls. Get to exploring right away! If you need some help getting started, check out this guide .
Enjoy this gem!
