So, have you seen this pop up from the corner of your eye yet?
That’s your friendly neighborhood Help Agent, compliments of the people at OpenOffice.org.
He’s a crafty little guy whose only purpose in life is to help you out – specifically, he’ll appear when he thinks that you’re completing a task where you may need some assistance.
He also shows up when he’s made some adjustments… such as capitalizing the first word of a sentence or changing straight quotes to curly quotes.
To see what brought the Help Agent to your screen simply click on it.
The OpenOffice help for that particular program will open right to the information you need. No searching required – he fixed something so he’s telling you what it is and why.
So nice of him, don’t you think?
You’ll also find that the Help Agent has the amazing ability to learn your needs.
If he appears and you ignore him he’ll close after a short time or you could click the x to close him manually. But, and here’s why he’s so smart, if you ignore or close it for the same task three times then the Help Agent will no longer show up for that task.
Basically, he learns that you don’t need him for that situation so he leaves you alone at that time.
Now let’s talk about the possible control you have over the Help Agent’s settings.
We’ll find them in the Tools menu, Options choice.
In the Options dialog box choose the OpenOffice.org area, General section.
On the right you’ll find a couple of options.
The most basic is whether or not you wish to use the Help Agent. Leave the box checked to use it and clear it to turn it off.
Now, assuming that you left the Help Agent turned on, below that you’ll find the Reset Help Agent button. Use this if you like the help, but have taught him some bad habits.
By resetting the Help Agent, you’re returning it to the default list of tasks that it shows up to help with. So the ones that you ignored three times are now triggering it again.
That’s it for control so when you’ve made your choices, click OK.
I know that doesn’t seem like a lot, but if you think about it, since you teach it to leave you alone in certain situations, you customize it continually while you work.
Isn’t it nice to know that there’s a little bit of help available when you need it from time to time?
