Virginia from Ozark, AR asks:

I use OpenOffice and a friend has sent a file that I cannot open. It is WPS. I don’t have any problem opening any other files. Can you help?

OpenOffice is supposed to be able to read many types of files, WPS included. Try following the steps below to open up a WPS file in OpenOffice, just to make sure you are going through the correct procedure.

Step 1 – Click on File at the top of the screen

Step 2 – Click on Open File in the new window that appears

Step 3 – Click on your Documents folder along the left side of the next window that opens

Step 4 – Go to the Files of type at the bottom of this same window and open the drop box

Step 5 – Scroll down until you see WPS files listed and then click on WPS files

Step 6 – Click the Open button and all the WPS files should be displayed

Step 7 – Double click on the WPS file to be opened

Once you have the desired file open, it can then be changed over to an OpenOffice file and saved. This procedure is detailed below. It’s important to know that some reformatting will have to take place after the file is opened in OpenOffice. Words that are underlined, in bold, or in italics will not be converted to the OpenOffice document. You will have to fix these later to make it look like the original.

Step 1 – Open the desired file in OpenOffice

Step 2 – Make any formatting changes necessary

Step 3 – Save the file by clicking on Save as

Step 4 – Enter the name you wish to save the file under

Step 5 – Delete the WPS file or keep it, it’s up to you

If you were still unable to open the WPS file after following the 7 steps listed, you have the option to save the file in a format that is readable by OpenOffice. The types of files that tend to cause little to no difficulties with OpenOffice are; RTF files, MS Word formatted files, MS Powerpoint documents and templates, and MS Excel files.

Note: The WPS file format supported by OOo is not the MS Works file format, but Kingsoft’s WPS2000 file format.

Multiple conversion tools exist online for all types of documents. You can enter ‘wps converter online‘ in the Google search bar and find a conversion tool that works for you. These will enable you to easily and quickly convert WPS files to DOC, PCX, PNG, TXT, ODT, PDF, or PS files. Most online tools for converting WPS files are able to be used in a similar fashion. Some programs will allow you to choose which type of file you wish to convert the WPS file into, while others are specifically for changing the WPS file to a single type of file.

Word Viewer is a conversion program that is put out by Microsoft and it enables people to view files that were saved as WPS files, as well as many other formats. The system requirements include one of the following operating systems:

Windows XP Service Pack 2
Windows Vista
Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
Windows 7

Once you get to the download page for Word Viewer, simply click on the Download button and save the file to your computer’s hard drive. Double-click on the file name wdviewer.exe to set the program up and follow the installation instructions as prompted. Be sure to install the Compatibility Pack as well. After installation is complete, follow the steps below to view a file in Word Viewer:

Step 1 – Go to the File menu at the top of the screen and click on it

Step 2 – Click on Open File

Step 3 – Open the drop down box next to the Look In list at the top of the box

Step 4 – Scroll down until you find the appropriate file or folder containing the file you wish to view

Step 5 – Open this file by double-clicking on it

You should be able to view any WPS file with no problems at all. If this program doesn’t turn out to be what you expected, you can always go to the Add/Remove Programs section on your Control Panel and uninstall it to make room for a different online conversion tool. For instance, if you have Word 97 or Word 2000 on your computer, then you could try downloading Works 2000 Converter. This program allows WPS files to be opened in these two applications without difficulty. It also works with older operating systems such as; Windows NT, 98, 95, and 2000.

I hope this information helps you make the proper adjustments necessary for being able to view WPS files easily.
