OpenOffice.org: Always Open Microsoft Office Files With OpenOffice.org

Tired of receiving MS Office files and running into issues when trying to open the file on a computer that doesn’t have MS Office?

I mean, you need to work on the file – now just view it so it’s got to be opened in OpenOffice.org but… what a pain to tell the computer each and every time what program to use!

Well, we can stop that problem for good right now.

We won’t begin in OpenOffice.org this time – instead you’ll need to locate a file on your hard drive. For example, if you want Excel files to always open in Calc then locate a saved Excel file via My Computer.

Now right-click on the file.

From the menu that opens choose “Open with“.

Below the suggested programs click on Choose Program choice.

When the Open With dialog box opens select the OpenOffice.org program that works with the current file type.

After you choose a program you’ll need to be sure to check the option to “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file“.

Now it’s time to click OK.

That’s all there is to it… from now on a quick double-click on that type of file will launch your chosen program and proceed directly to the business of opening the file without a lot of hassles.
