Opera 101: Explore This Free Browser

Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 by | Filed Under: Free Downloads, Using The Internet

Last week, I told you about the free Opera browser and offered instructions on how to download and install. If you haven’t read that tip yet, you can check it out by clicking here.

When you open Opera, this is the default look.

As with most browsers, you’ll find an address bar at the top.

In Opera, this start page is called Speed Dial.

On the left side of Speed Dial, you’ll see the menu below.

Click the heart icon for Bookmarks.

Check the box next to Show Bookmarks Bar to have bookmarks display at the top of your page.

To add a bookmark, just click the heart icon to the right of the address bar.

Click the News icon to see current news stories on a variety of subjects. The stories are organized by categories. Click the categories and the top stories will appear in the pane on the right.

Below that is the Tabs icon.

To add a new tab in Opera, just click the + button at the top of the screen.

If you have multiple tabs open, you can navigate between them by clicking in the tabs section.

You can also do that by clicking the tab at the top. But if you have quite a few tabs open, this can be very handy.

Click the clock icon for History. Your browsing history will be displayed in the pane on the right.

You can search your history in the search box at the top of the pane.

You can also click the Menu bar at the top left for a drop-down menu.

As with any browser, you can navigate to a page by typing the address into the search bar.  You can also search from the Speed Dial page.

Feel free to explore Opera on your own and let us know what you think.

The wife and I both use Opera and enjoy it immensely. Unfortunately several banking and other service related entities do not support it yet, forcing us to use Microsoft Edge or Windows Internet Explorer 11.

  2. […] Yesterday we took a look at the basics of the free Opera Browser. Today we’re going to go a little deeper and look at how you can add extensions to Opera.  If you haven’t read our introduction to Opera, click here to learn the basics. […]

Great browser. have used it for 15 years. never found time to export new features, so your expansion of Opera’s features is a great learning experience. Would like more of Opera’s features.

  4. Dan Hobart says:

I have used Opera and Firefox exclusively for years. I love both of them.
