Outlook & Outlook.com : Are They connected?

Hello WorldStart,

I’m curious about something. Are “Outlook.com”, the e-mail service and “Microsoft Outlook”, the e-mail management system software connected in any way? Thanks.

Hello Terry. The answer is really yes and no.  While they operate independently of each other, Outlook.com and Microsoft Outlook are both products offered by Microsoft. You can sync contacts and use both to access your Microsoft SkyDrive account.

For those not familiar with the differences between the products,  Outlook.com is a free web-based e-mail service that you access with a web browser. If you previously had a Hotmail, Live.com or MSN e-mail address, it has been converted to Outlook.com.

Outlook is a program that you purchase and install on your computer. Outlook is what’s called an e-mail client. It downloads e-mail messages from any e-mail service you choose to your computer. You can also use it to compose and send messages, plus it has e-mail management features not offered in Outlook.com.

You can choose to use them in conjunction with each other, but you don’t have to.

I somewhat disagree with your answer to the question that was asked. In your answer your stated: If you previously had a Hotmail, Live.com or MSN e-mail address, it has been converted to Outlook.com.

I have seen what Outlook looks like compared to what Live looks like and they look similar but not alike. I have Windows Live on my computer and the look has not changed. So, Windows Live is still alive when it comes to email programs

I have a related question but don’t see how to submit it.
I just changed from Outlook Express to Win Live Mail (on an XP) WLM made a pretty smooth transfer of all my files. Now I’m trying to decide where to move: Win 7 or 8? Can I move WLM to Win 8?
