Password Protect Zip Files

Harold from Austin, Texas asks:

In Windows 7, is there a way to password protect zip files?

A zip file is a file package that has been compressed to a specific format. ZIP, RAR, and 7z are common zip formats. You can also organize your files with data compression programs such as 7-Zip, WinRAR, and WinZip. For example, you can allocate numerous documents, programs, and multimedia files into a single zip file. If you want to prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing your zip files, you need to secure them with a password.

For this, we’ll be using 7-Zip, an open source program that allows you to create, extract, and secure zip files. Download 7-Zip and save it to your computer.

Click on the setup.exe file to start the installation process. The installation wizard will guide you, and install 7-Zip on your computer. After you install 7-Zip, it will recognize all of the zipped files on your computer. Therefore, when you right-click a zip file, you will be able to configure it with 7-Zip.

Begin securing your zip files with a password.

If the file is already zipped, you need to extract (unzip) it. To do this, right-click on the zip file, point the cursor to 7-Zip and select Extract to (name of the file). This will extract all of the files to a new folder.

Zip the file you just extracted with 7-Zip.

Right-click on the file, point the cursor to 7-Zip and select Add to Archive.

This will open the Add to Archive dialogue box. Go to the Encryption section and add your password. Click OK to complete your new secured zipped file.
