Photo Storage Options: What Should I Choose?

Thursday, March 17th, 2016 by | Filed Under: Digital Photography, File & Disk Management

A reader is looking for some photo sharing options. “Years ago I had a Kodak cameras, They stopped Kodak share & we had to download or go to the one’s they selected, which I did & they controlled. I also had to pay them for each picture. So I bout a new camera, an Olympus. Now they are doing the same thing. Olympus Memory Works storage service pictures stored on the net will no longer exist . You must download or migrate to eyefi cloud service. The email is very vague & I hate to commit like last time & lose all my pictures again. They won’t communicate at all with me & once I chose, I’m stuck. Can I put them on a disk to make copies in the future off the disk? I’m 76 years old & had a stroke with memory problems, so even though I’ve been on a few years, I don’t know much! Do I have to get another program, other then what they recommend to transfer them to?”

I’m certainly all in favor of backing up your photos on your PC. You could easily put them on a flash drive or an external hard drive and pull them up whenever you need to print off a copy or share a photo.

The reason you’re seeing brand-specific photo sharing options disappear, is that they really aren’t necessary these days. There are free and paid cloud storage options available for backing up photos. And a growing number of people use their smartphone as a primary camera. Those people are able to instantly back up to services like Google photos or iPhotos.

There’s a a ton of free cloud storage space available for photos. You could use OneDrive or GoogleDrive, both of which offer several GBs of storage for free. And these services aren’t going to charge you to access or share your photos.  The Google Photos service could be especially helpful for you.

You can use these services to share your photos with friends and family, which can eliminate the need to have prints made.  One of my favorite ways to store share and organize photos is Facebook. Though I’m not going to select it as a permanent storage destination for my images.

I’d suggest downloading your photos and backing them up to a flash drive or an external hard drive. Then shop around for one of the big cloud services that meets your needs and think about backing your images up there as well.
