Microsoft Bids on Yahoo!

If you read or listened to the news since last Friday (February 1, 2008) and through this past weekend, you have probably already heard about today's topic, but just in case some of you are still in the dark, I'm here to fill you in! Toward the end of the day on Friday, a new story was plastered all over the Internet and on TV concerning the two corporate giants of Microsoft and Yahoo! I know it may sound a little weird to hear both of those names put together, but it all makes sense in the end. Keep reading for all the juicy details!

This is basically what happened: Microsoft made an unsolicited bid to buy Yahoo! for approximately $44.6 billion. Whoa! Why would they want to do that, you ask? Well, Microsoft has been trying for years to rise above the ever popular Google, but they haven't been able to do so on their own. So, in hopes of finally being able to do that, they want to buy out Yahoo! and tackle Google once and for all. Now, with Google being the top search leader on the Web today, that may be a difficult task, but it looks as if Microsoft will do whatever it takes.

Of course, Microsoft is still the world's biggest technology company, but if they don't gain a more loyal audience on the Web, they could lose that position rather quickly. Because of that, this is a deal Microsoft really needs to go for. No deals have been made yet and there's no saying Yahoo! will even sell to Microsoft, but the negotiations have begun. Yahoo! said they will carefully look over the proposal, but it's anyone's guess when or if a final deal will be made. Like I said, there are several news stories out about this right now, so if you're interested in learning more, you can either search for it online or simply turn on your TV. You're bound to hear something. I will also continue to keep you updated as things start to unravel, so be sure to stay tuned!

Q:
I have my own personal Web site and I was wondering if there was any way I could find out which sites use mine as a reference or any that just mention my site. What's the easiest way to do that? Please help!

A:
That's a very good question! If you maintain your very own Web site, whether it be for personal use, for a business or whatever, wouldn't it be interesting to find out what other Web sites link out to your homepage? Then let's do it!

Often times, other Web site administrators will come across your site and see something they would like to include on theirs. For example, this happens a lot with WorldStart's wallpaper. We get e-mails everyday from people asking if they can include our wallpaper on their Web site. Fortunately, we are very open to letting other people use our material, as long as they give us proper credit. So, if you have a business Web site and you have a daily business tip (or something similar), other people may be interested in using that on their site as well. (as long as proper credit is given!)

This type of thing is very common. Most people seem to like it, because it gives their site more recognition and it helps get the word out to more places. On the other hand, some of you may not like your material being used on other sites. That is, of course, perfectly fine, because it is your Web site. You own it, you run it and you can do what you want with it!

Either way, this next little trick I'm going to share with you will help you see which Web sites have links to yours, which in turn, anyone can see. If you like the recognition, you can always go and check to make sure the site is giving you proper credit and if you don't like the situation, you can always go to the site, look up the administrator's contact information and you can e-mail them and ask them to remove your material from their site. They have to comply with you, because it's your property! But, all in all, you can see this tip is good for either side of the track. Alright, here we go!

This trick is for the Google search engine only. Go to Google's homepage and in the search box, you're going to type a simple line: link:yoursite.com. When you're done, just click on Search.

You will, of course, change the "yoursite" part to your Web site's address. For instance, I wanted to check out how many sites have WorldStart's information linked. So, I went to Google and typed in link:worldstart.com. Several entries came up, which didn't surprise me, but it was neat to see all of them! I also tried doing one for MySpace, so I typed in link:myspace.com and even more came up for that.

Go ahead and give it a try for your Web site. It's really pretty cool if you stop and think about it!

MS Office

Faster Scrolling in Word

Do you have an MS Word document that's completely full of graphics? Hate the extra time it takes to scroll through a document like that? Would you like Word to work a little faster with the document for you?

If you've answered, "Yes, yes and yes," here's a quick trick to help with the slowdown that all the extra pictures tend to cause.

Word has the ability to use something called a Picture Placeholder in your documents, displaying only an empty box where the picture belongs. When you use the Print Preview feature, you'll see the pictures. When you print your document, you'll see the pictures. But, when you edit your document, you'll only see an empty frame where your picture will be.

By doing that, your system doesn't have to use the memory and time to load up the pictures. It's only working with an empty frame, so the scrolling speed during your editing will increase, saving you time and frustration!

Ready to learn the "how to" of this? I thought you might be, so let's get to it!

In older versions of MS Word, Picture Placeholders can be found on the Tools menu, Options choice, View tab.

In Word 2007, you'll need to use the Office Button to get to the Word Options button.

Once you're in the Options dialogue window, you need to go to Advanced options and scroll down to the Show document content section.

In any version, you need to locate and check the option for Picture Placeholders and then click OK.

That's it. You should find that you're now able to zoom, zoom, zoom when you scroll!

Additional AIM Features

For all of you avid AIM users out there, I have many new and exciting features and updates to show you for the latest version of the AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) program (AIM 6.5!) In addition to the basic features of setting up status and away messages, sending instant messages and texts via AIM, sending files, talking, sharing videos and pictures, there are additional functions and uses to this program as well. So, let's check them out!

First of all, AIM allows you to select and set up Expressions, which can help you personalize your profile just the way you want it. They also help to show your buddies the real you! To set yours up, go to the Edit menu in any open IM window and from there, click on Expressions. That will bring up a page with all of your personal expressions listed.

Under the Expressions menu, you can select your Personality by choosing a buddy icon, buddy wallpaper, buddy sound and your very own emoticons. Click on Change under any of those options to set everything up. Or, if you want to simply select the generic buddy feature, click the Reset button.

Other features can be accessed under the People tab on the top menu bar of any IM box. The first two options enable you to either start a Buddy Chat or a Voice Chat. When you click on either of those, you get to select which buddies you want to invite by clicking on their names from your Buddy List. You can then click Send to send out the invites and start the chat room. This is a great way to keep in touch with all of your friends and family!

Also under the People tab, you can access a buddy’s Buddy Info, which is their personal profile. You can see their profile, add them to your buddy list if they're not already on there, ignore or block them if they're bothering you or if you no longer wish to receive messages from them and view your Buddy Logs. Buddy Logs keep every conversation you ever have with a particular buddy on the same computer. They also keep track of the dates and times of the conversations. So, if you ever want to look back on a conversation you had, you can open this page to view your logs:

These handy features are easily accessible under the toolbar on top of each IM window you open. One of the nicer features about the new AIM is that you only need to have one IM box open and there are tabs for each of the buddies you are chatting with. You just need to switch between tabs to alternate between the multiple conversations you're having. Happy AIMing!

Today's Feature

Macro Mode

Another reader asked: My camera is supposed to be able to focus down to four inches, but I can't get it anywhere close to that. Do you think my camera is defective?

No worries! Your camera is probably just fine. I've seen this happen several times, so I know you're not alone!

In order to get in really close, you need to switch your digicam to the Macro mode, which is usually an icon with a flower on it. That should allow your lens to focus as advertised. Simply look for a button or setting that shows the little flower icon and you should be all set!

Here are a couple more tips for you:

1.) When shooting in Macro mode, you may find a tripod to be helpful. All camera and lens movement is amplified when doing close ups, so a tripod can save the day.

2.) Try to get your camera parallel to your subject as much as possible. Also, you should always watch your focus zone. When shooting in Macro mode, you don't have as much depth of field as you normally do. Think of depth of field as photo talk for "depth of focus."

Basically, when you shoot macros, less of the photograph will be in focus than with other types of photography. So, keep as much as you can in that "focus zone" by keeping your camera parallel to it.

For example, note how the flower in this sample photo is sharp (well, at least the front of it) and the background is blurry. Had I not been parallel to the subject (if I was shooting down at an angle, for instance), it would not have been as sharp top to bottom:

Give your Macro mode a shot today!

MailFreezr

Are you terrible at remembering important dates such as birthdays and anniversaries? Do you want to make sure your loved ones get a message from you on their special day, no matter what? Well, now you can through MailFreezr: a revolutionary Web site that freezes your messages until the date you choose to send them. When the day you’ve chosen rolls around, MailFreezr then sends your messages out.

How does it work? Well, it's very easy to use! Just fill in the recipient's e-mail address, your e-mail address, your name and a subject. Then you just simply write your message. For example, I chose to send my sister a birthday message. I labeled it "Happy Birthday" and wrote her a birthday message in the message box. It's so cool!

Next, you choose how many years you want it to be frozen. I chose one year, so now I’m covered for her birthday next year! If there's a situation where you can’t choose the specific date, you can plan accordingly and fill out the e-mail on that day. Let's say you just got married and you want to send your spouse a message for your five or even 10 year anniversary. To do so, just fill it out on your anniversary and set the freeze date for five or 10 years!

After you’ve filled out all the address fields, the message field and you've selected how many years you want it to be frozen, you’ll need to type in the code above the box that reads "Code" (you can just type it over the word). Then simply hit the Freeze button and you're all set!

At the top of the page, you have the navigation options of Freeze, Check and About. About will tell you all about the service and Freeze will take you back to the main form. Check, however, is a lot more interesting! It allows you to put in your e-mail address and see if anyone has frozen a message for you. Check it out today!
