One way to safely open suspicious email is to open in plain text mode. This prevents any nasties malicious code or rogue images hidden in the HTML from doing their thing. It will, however, also take out any formatting and pictures so don’t try reading the HTML version of our newsletter in plain text or it will look lame and plain. Here’s what to do…
Outlook Express: Go to Tools/Options and click the “Read” tab. There you will see the option to “Read all messages as plain text”—check the box.
To put things back, follow the same procedure and uncheck the box.
Surprisingly I couldn’t find an option to recieve all mail as plain text in Thunderbird, Yahoo Mail or AOL. If you know a way, please let me know.
Be sure to undo Plain Text to view HTML email (like our newsletter) the right way.
