Pogo Games and the Popup Blocker

When I play games in, I sometimes get the message: “You must have popup blocker installed” and I cannot access the game. How can I fix this problem? Thank you.

Hi Klaus, and thanks for the great question.

I’m a Pogo game player myself, and I’m sure that this question has befuddled more than just you.

For those who don’t know, Pogo is a website where you can play games either solo, or online against friends or strangers.  I actually met a couple on here who I now consider to be among my best friends.  There are two levels of membership: the free “Pogo” membership, which allows you generous but limited access to their game titles, and the $39.99 “Club Pogo” membership, which allows you unlimited access to their games and all of their features.  Pogo not only features multiple versions of old standby’s like solitaire, freecell, video slots and poker, but also classics like Scrabble, Monopoly and Battleship.

I know the message that you’re talking about, although I’ve never seen that particular wording.  Since I use Firefox, this is the version that I’m used to seeing:

The reason that modern browsers have pop-up blockers installed is because pop-ups are used as malware delivery systems by bad guys.  Pogo, being a good guy, uses pop-ups to open their games in new windows.

I can see how you would find that wording confusing, but it’s not saying that you must have a pop-up blocker in order to play the game, but that you must have a pop-up blocker installed, because it can’t open the game in a new window.  Fortunately, there’s an easy fix for this.  If this is a site that’s known to you, like Pogo, simply click on the OPTIONS button and then click “Always allow pop-ups from this site” option that appears on the pull-down menu.  If it’s an unknown or untrustworthy site, then do yourself a favor and allow the browser to continue blocking pop-ups.

I hope that this helps!

I was until Worldstart newsletter showed me how to stop it. Why won’t Pogo work on my new Kindle Fire HD WiFi?

  2. Lisa says:

My problem with Pogo games is that I can get to the game lobby, but then get the popup blocker message when trying to set a table, even though I have my browser set to allow popups. Trying to hold the Control-Alt keys doesn’t work. Any other ideas why that happens and how to bypass the blocker? I am on an EMac using Safari or Firefox.

I use Internet Explorer and when a game shows a blocker, it tells me to just hold down the CTRL key when I click PLAY and the play screen pops right up. Some of the games that are new require this until I get them added to the list of allowed games IN my internet explorer under options.
