Printing a Worksheet in OpenOffice Calc

Sometimes I find that in order to accurately edit something, I need to see it in hard copy form… it’s just the way that I am. I need to be able to write on the page and think through my corrections in writing.
Other times, especially with large worksheets, I need to see it in printed form because it doesn’t all fit on the screen at one time and I can use the printout to double-check references made in formulas. Did I actually use the correct cell references or are there mistakes?
To be quite honest, there are a lot of reasons why you might want your worksheet printed in a form that looks exactly like what you find on the screen with grid lines, column letter labels, row number labels and all.
If that is the type of hard copy you seek, then here’s what you need to know to make it happen.
We’ll need to start with the Format menu, Page choice.
Everything we need to turn a printout looking like this:
into one that looks like this:
can be found under the Print section of the Sheet tab. (Yes – I did end up increasing the width of column D to view the formulas – in my opinion, a small price to pay for the editing conveniences that I gain. I can put it back to size later…)
Select the elements you want to see on your printout and click OK.
-Column and row headers will print the letters and numbers used as references for their location.
-Grid will print the worksheet grid lines without you creating borders that you’d later have to remove
-Formulas will print the actual formula instead of the value it found.
Those three choices are what I used to make the changes that created the printout shown above.
When I’m done, I can simply return to the Format menu, Page choice, Sheet tab and uncheck anything that I do not need on a final printout.
A really simple thing like altering your hard copy could save you a lot of editing time and prevent quite a few headaches during the time you do spend editing the worksheet.
